CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The third-seeded Coe College men's basketball team opened the American Rivers Conference Tournament Tuesday evening, taking down sixth-seeded Wartburg College 66-50 at Kohawk Arena to advance to Thursday's quarterfinals. The Kohawks, who advance to face second-seeded Loras Thursday evening, played stifling defense throughout the game, holding Wartburg to 24.3 percent shooting and 12.1 percent from beyond the arc. Despite a tough shooting night for the Kohawks from beyond the arc, a 20-point double-double from
Kanyon Bryte was enough as the sophomore helped Coe lead for all but three minutes and 12 seconds. Bryte and Coe built an early lead in the first half, owning a 17-11 advantage near the midway mark. Coe extended the lead before the end of the half to nine and pushed on in the second half, leading by as many as 19 in the final 20 minutes. Bryte added four blocks as he displayed his all-around game in 23 minutes of action. Senior guard
Ryan Dolphin was the only other Kohawk to hit double-digits in the win, totaling 15 points and three assists as he was 6-of-9 from the floor.

A bucket from Wartburg in the final seconds sliced Coe's lead back to single digits but the worrying signs were there for the Knights. The visitors stuck around for a few minutes early in the second, cutting the deficit to seven with a five-point swing. The Kohawks put the game away with a dominant stretch before the midway mark, outscoring Wartburg 14-6 to push its advantage to 15 points. One last gasp from the Knights made it a 13-point game with six minutes to play but a clutch 3 from Cooper Nailor sealed the deal as the senior's shot made it a 17-point lead with just under six to play.
