CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College Baseball team wrapped up its Spring Break trip to Florida yesterday, finishing off with a record of 5-1 against four different opponents. The Kohawks opened the RussMat Invitational with a regional victory over (RV) Bethel, taking down the Royals 10-3 for a strong start. The Following day, Coe split a doubleheader with UMass Dartmouth, winning 10-3 in game one before a 7-6 defeat in game two. After a day off on Sunday, Coe exploded for a 14-7 win over Farmingdale State ahead of a doubleheader sweep of William Patterson, where the Kohawks won 10-5 and 11-1 in a pair of seven-inning games. During the week, Coe hit .368 as a team with 23 stolen bases, 19 doubles, four triples and two homers. The Kohawk pitching staff struck out 45 batters across 46 innings, led by
Nolan Schroeder and
Trevor Morse, who each punched out eight hitters in their respective starts.
Jon Wille hit a staggering .591 on the trip, racking up 13 hits, four doubles and two triples while driving in 10 RBI and swiping 4 bags.
GAME ONE
COE 10 - (RV) BETHEL 3
- Coe totaled 13 hits in the opening game, backing up a solid performance from Jack Walsh on the mound as the junior earned his third win of the year. Jack Casey, Wille, Brent Yonkovic, and Austin Gomez had multi-RBI games, helping Coe race out to an early 6-0 lead before the end of the third. Evan Bender and Xander Cloudy took over for Walsh after six innings, finishing off the win while the offense added four more runs to pad the score.
GAME TWO
COE - 10 - UMASS DARTMOUTH 3
- The Kohawk offense raced out to another early lead in their second game of the trip, totaling six runs before UMass Dartmouth scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth. Luke Schieltz, Wille, Eli Elsbecker and Ryan Thoreson combined to take the lead at the plate, giving plenty of margin to Schroeder, who struck out eight in 4.2 innings. Brady Alexander and Michael Matejka rounded out the game on the bump, securing the win with solid relief work.
GAME THREE
UMASS DARMOUTH 7 - COE 6
- Coe's lone loss of the week came in game two, with UMass Dartmouth scoring two runs in the top of the first and never looking back. Coe tied the game in the bottom of the first with an error and a single from Wille, but two runs in the second and three runs in the third and fended off a late charge from the Kohawks, who scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh before leaving the tying run at second base.
GAME FOUR
COE 14 - FARMINGDALE STATE 7
- The Coe offense responded with 15 hits and 14 runs in the single game against the Rams, scoring in every inning but the ninth. The teams traded runs in the first inning, but the Kohawks ripped off five runs to take an 8-3 lead as Jake Mitchell, Thoreson, and Elsbecker powered Coe. The Kohawks continued to pile on, extending the lead to 14-6 in the eighth with RBI from Brent Yonkovic, Wille and Ryan Brosius. Morse and Cloudy worked on the mound for the Kohawks, with Morse earning the victory and Cloudy picking up a three-inning save where he allowed just three hits and one run.
GAME FIVE
COE 10 - WILLIAM PATTERSON 5
- Coe started with four runs in the opening inning of game one, as a three-run triple from Wille and a sac-bunt RBI from Yonkovic made it 4-0. Ater a two-run single from Thoreson, William Patterson pulled within one run of the lead in the fourth with a two-run homer at 6-5. Brosius, Thoreson and Casey helped shut the door for the Kohawks, driving home insurance runs for Connor Maiers, who came out of the bullpen to earn the win with scoreless 3.1 innings.
GAME SIX
COE 11 - WILLIAM PATTERSON 1
- The Kohawks bashed out 18 hits in game two, wrapping up the week in style with an 11-1 victory. Coe went behind in the first inning before 11 unanswered runs with Wille, Gomez, Elsbecker and Brosius recording multi-RBI performances. Matejka did well in three innings, earning the victory while Bender, Alexander and Landen Powell shut the door out of the pen.
