CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College baseball team opened a weekend series against Simpson College with a victory, defeating the Storm 8-6 in a back-and-forth contest. Coe opened the scoring in the second inning with four runs as
Luke Schieltz and
Jack Casey recorded a pair of two-run hits to establish an early advantage.
Jack Walsh, who earned his fourth win of the season, did well on the mound for Coe despite not having his top-tier stuff. Simpson managed to get to him in the fifth with two runs on a pair of singles but back-to-back run-scoring singles from
Eli Elsbecker and Schiletz helped Coe answer. The Storm continued to threaten the lead with another two in the sixth and one in the seventh, but the Kohawk offense did enough to pad the lead for Walsh and
Brady Alexander, who entered in the eighth and recorded a six-out save.

- Coe jumped on the visitors in the second inning, scoring four times on three hits. Wille and Louis Smelcer started the frame with back-to-back hit by pitches before a perfectly placed bunt from Eli Elsbecker loaded the bags. A two-run single from Schiletz opened the scoring, later followed by a two-run double from Casey for 4-0. Simpson got back in the game with a two-spot in the fifth, scoring twice after an inning-opening error from Coe. A pair of doubles from the Storm halved the deficit before Walsh stranded a runner at second to end the inning. The Kohawks restored a four-run lead with two in the bottom of the inning, getting back-to-back RBI knocks from Elsbecker and Schieltz with two outs. The back-and-forth continued with Simpson striking in its half of the sixth, taking advantage of a defensive miscue from Coe to push two home. Coe pulled one back in the bottom of the sixth after Casey led off with a double and later scored from third on a wild pitch. Simpson made it a two-run game again in the seventh, scoring with back-to-back two-out hits to pull within 7-5. The Kohawks found a key insurance run in the eighth, backing up a 1, 2, 3 inning for Alexander with a run-scoring single from Ryan Thoreson for 8-5. Alexander ran into some trouble in the ninth after two quick outs, allowing three-straight batters to reach and one run to score before a game-ending flyout.
