STORM LAKE, Iowa — The Coe College baseball team wrapped up a weekend series at Buena Vista Saturday afternoon, falling 6-5 in the third and final game of the set with the Beavers. The Kohawks took an early lead after a solo homer from
Ryan Thoreson in the first inning before the hosts leveled the game with a solo homer of their own in the second. The Kohawks struck for three in the fourth inning as
Ryan Brosius singled home the go-ahead run before a two-run blast from
Brent Yonkovic capped off the frame. Coe added another run in the sixth with an RBI single from
Luke Schieltz, but Buena Vista responded with four in the bottom of the seventh to quickly level the game. The teams went scoreless until the bottom of the ninth, when the Beavers got a one-out single before later plating the game-winning run with a single to left-center.
GAME ONE
BUENA VISTA 6 - COE 5
- Thoreson blasted his fifth homer of the season in the top of the first, giving the Kohawks a 1-0 advantage. The Beavers leveled the game two innings later, bouncing back after back-to-back strikeouts in the second before a solo shot tied the game. The Kohawk offense struck for three runs in the fourth, getting leadoff singles from Jon Wille and Eli Elsbecker. A double play threatened to end the chances, but Brosius came through clutch with a single to center for 2-1. Yonkovic doubled Coe's run total in the following at-bat, blasting a two-run shot to make it 4-1. Schieltz extended the lead in the top of the sixth, driving home Jake Mitchell, who had reached earlier on a hit by pitch. Buena Vista pulled all four back in the bottom of the seventh, getting three singles to make it 5-2 before a three-run triple later in the inning. Coe left a pair of runners on base in the top of the eighth, failing to capitalize on its last chance of the game. Buena Vista won the game in the bottom of the ninth, putting a runner on with a one-out single before a single to left center ended the game two batters later.
