Baseball sweeps Nebraska Wesleyan with 4-1 & 2-1 victories

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Coe College baseball team finished off a three-game sweep of Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Prairie Wolves 4-1 in the first game of a doubleheader before a 2-1 victory in game two. The Kohawks started early in the opener, plating a pair of runs in the first inning on RBI from Jon Wille and Louis Smelcer. Jack Walsh was dominant on the mound, taking advantage of the early lead as, he kept the hosts hitless until the sixth and surrendered a lone run in the eighth. Wille had three total hits and two RBI in the game, while Ryan Thoreson and Eli Elsbecker each had multi-hit performances. It was another low-scoring affair in game two as Nolan Schroeder pitched 5.2 strong innings, allowing just one run. His offense picked him up in the sixth inning with an RBI single from Thoreson before a sacrifice fly from Isaiah Espey gave Coe the lead in the seventh. Casey Stecker and Brady Alexander combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, with Alexander picking up his third save of the year. 
 
GAME ONE
COE 4 - NWU 1
  • The Kohawks gave Walsh a lead in the opening inning, scoring two runs on RBI from Wille and Smelcer before two straight putouts ended any further hopes. The offense added an insurance run in the third, loading the bases with the first three hitters reaching. A groundout RBI from Yonkovic extended the lead to 3-0 before an inning-ending strikeout cut down the chance for more. Walsh's offense added another run in the sixth as Wille registered an RBI single, plating Isaiah Espey, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Walsh allowed the hosts' first hit in the bottom of the sixth and later in the eighth, allowed a single run on an RBI groundout. Landon Moore entered in the bottom of the ninth in relief of Walsh and worked quickly, going 1, 2, 3 to lock up the win. 
 
GAME TWO
COE 2 - NWU 1
  • Wesleyan took a lead in the bottom of the fourth, getting a run-scoring single before a strong throw from Austin Gomez cut down a second Prairie Wolf runner at the plate. The Kohawks got a run in back-to-back innings, tying the game in the sixth before taking the lead in the seventh. Thoreson plated Coe's tying run with a two-out single in the sixth, bringing home Gomez. Espey put Coe ahead one inning later with a productive out, flying out to right to bring home Eli Elsbecker for the lead. Casey Stecker, who relieved Nolan Schroeder after a solid outing in the sixth, remained for the seventh and went 1, 2, 3 in the seventh. Brady Alexander entered in the eighth and recorded the final six outs, leaving a pair of runners on base in the final two frames en route to the save.
