Bryan Martin recently completed his 12th season as the Coe College Head Men's Basketball Coach. Martin was named head coach prior to the 2012-13 school year after spending four years as the associate head coach at the University of North Dakota. During his time at Coe, Martin has racked up 166 wins (1st all-time at Coe) while leading the Kohawks to numerous conference tournament appearances including the 2023 A-R-C Tournament Championship and the 2020 A-R-C Championship game. Under Martin, 25 Kohawk players have earned all-conference honors including three A-R-C Defensive Player of the Year winners.
The 2023-24 season was one for the record books for the Kohawks. Coe captured a share of the A-R-C regular season championship going 13-3 in league play earning co-champ status along with Nebraska Wesleyan. The Kohawks posted a remarkable 22-6 overall record and received an at-large bid to the Division 3 NCAA tournament. Coe won their first round game over Wabash College 79-74 in OT before falling in the round of 32 to host and eventual National Champion Trine University 70-76. The Kohawks finished the year ranked #23 in the nation in the D3Hoops.com national poll. Three Kohawks would earn All-A-R-C recognition as Cael Schmitt and TJ Schnurr were 1st Team, and Bennett Sherry received 2nd Team honors. Schmitt and Schnurr would also be named to the D3Hoops.com All-Region Team, and Schmitt picked up NABC 2nd Team All-District honors. Schmitt was also one of ten finalists for the prestigious Jostens Award which recognized the best players in D3.
The 2022-23 Kohawks made history by winning Coe’s first ever conference tournament title. Coe made its return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1976. The magical run to the championship as the 6th seed featured five straight wins including three straight on the road in the conference tourney over Nebraska Wesleyan (78-60), Dubuque (78-73), and the championship clincher over Loras (93-86). In the title game, junior forward TJ Schnurr exploded for 36 points and a school-record shooting performance of 14-of-15 from the floor to shoot 93.3%. Coe was led by two first-team All-A-R-C performers in Cael Schmitt and TJ Schnurr. Schmitt was also voted as the A-R-C Defensive Player of the Year. In addition, Schmitt earned Academic All-American honors as well as being one of ten national finalists for the prestigious Division III Jostens Trophy. The Kohawks finished the season 16-13 after falling to host Washington University in the first round of the Division III NCAA Tournament.
Coe had its first 20-win season in nearly 20 years in 2021-22 as Coach Martin's squad finished 20-7 overall and 11-5 in the A-R-C. The Kohawks, who won their opening A-R-C tournament game over Nebraska Wesleyan before falling to second-seeded BVU, were led by four all-conference performers in Jarad Kruse, Cael Schmitt, Ray Thrapp and Jacob Robertson.
Although the 2021 season was shortened, it was still successful for Coach Martin's squad. The Kohawks finished 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the A-R-C, winning their opening conference tournament game over Simpson before falling to the eventual champion, Dubuque. Following the season, Jarad Kruse and Cael Schmitt earned first-team all-conference honors while Schmitt was named the d3hoops.com West Region Rookie of the Year.
Martin’s squad had an outstanding 2019-20 season, ending the year 17-10 overall and 11-5 in the conference. Their play in the conference saw them finish second in the league. Coe had the second-best scoring defense (74.2 ppg). The Kohawks led the league in 3-point percentage (.409) and had the second-best assist-to-turnover ratio (1.41). Four Kohawks earned all-conference honors including Adam McDermott, who was named the A-R-C Defensive Player of the Year and first team. Austin Roth joined McDermott on the first team. Jacob Robertson earned second-team all-conference while Josh Schmitt received honorable mention all-conference honors.
Academic excellence has been a staple of the Kohawk program during Martin's tenure. The Kohawks have been awarded the NABC Team Excellence award for outstanding academics in each of the last 11 years. In 2014-15, Coe had 12 players named to the NABC Honors Court team which recognizes individual excellence in academics. No other team in the nation had more players receive that honor that year at any level in college basketball.
Martin has also led the Kohawks on three foreign tours, going to Costa Rica in May of 2022 and 2015, then to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in August of 2018. The Kohawks have also been well-represented on the USA D-3 Select team which competes in Brazil each summer. Andrew Wirth and Seth Light made the team in 2013, JT Vonderaar and Matt Daoust in 2014, and Marshall Shedeck in 2016.
Martin played a key role in North Dakota's transition from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I. In the Fighting Sioux's last two years in the Great West Conference, they won the league title. Martin also served as the recruiting coordinator and offensive coordinator. In 2011, North Dakota led the nation in scoring output by freshmen. ESPN ranked the 2010 North Dakota recruiting class as the top class in the Great West Conference.
Prior to working at North Dakota, Martin was the head coach at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC). After inheriting a 5-26 squad from the previous season, the Trojans won 15 games and advanced to the regional semifinals in Martin's first year. During his second season, NIACC set a school record for regular-season victories, as they were 23-8 with another appearance in the regional semifinals. Martin also served as an admissions counselor during his time at NIACC.
Martin also has had coaching stints at Indian Hills Community College, Simpson College and the University of South Dakota. During his time at Indian Hills, he helped produce 14 NCAA Division I players and had a top 10 NJCAA ranking in 2002 and 2003. While at South Dakota, he helped the squad to back-to-back North Central Conference Championships in 2000 and 2001, while advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 2000.
During his collegiate days, Martin played two seasons at Morningside College. He helped the Mustangs to the 1995 North Central Region Championship, along with an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. He was inducted in the Morningside Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. Martin graduated from Simpson College in 1999. In his three years in Indianola, the Storm compiled a 60-19 record. After helping the Storm to the 1998 Iowa Conference Championship, Martin was a team captain his senior year.
Martin resides in Cedar Rapids with his wife, Angie. The couple has three sons, twins Pearson and Evan, and Kellen.
