Matthew Barreau (Ba-Row) is the Coe College Director of Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track & Field. Barreau began his duties at Coe in October of 2017.
Prior to arriving at Coe, Barreau spent 13 years coaching at all three NCAA levels. Most recently, Barreau spent six years as the Head Men's and Women's Cross Country and Assistant Track & Field Coach at Christopher Newport University. In six years at Christopher Newport, Barreau coached 47 NCAA National Qualifiers, 88 USTFCCCA All-Region selections and led the women's cross country team to the NCAA National Championships for the first time in school history. He also led the men's team to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA National Championships.
During his time at Christopher Newport, he was named the USTFCCCA Regional Coach of the Year four times (twice in cross country and twice in track and field). He was also named a conference coach of the year eight times. During his six years leading the Captains, his athletes set 27 conference records, 15 conference meet records and 42 school records.
Prior to his time at Christopher Newport, he served as an assistant coach at Bethune-Cookman, Concordia University (Oregon), Portland State, Adams State, Oregon State and Western Oregon. Barreau holds USATF Level III Certification in Endurance, while holding USATF Level II Certifications in Endurance, Sprints/Hurdles/Relays, Jumps and Combined Events.
Barreau received his Bachelors of Science Degree from Western Oregon in 2004 in Physical Education with a minor in Biology. He currently serves as the 2nd Vice President for the NCAA Division III Executive Committee and is chair of the NCAA Division III Cross Country Awards Committee. He also serves on the NCAA Rule 4.4.14 Task Force and the NCAA Cross Country Course Requirement Task Force.
