Men's Soccer Picks Up First Conference Victory of the Year

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's soccer team used a 64th minute goal to defeat Nebraska Wesleyan 1-0 on Tuesday evening at Clark Field. The win moves the Kohawks to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the A-R-C while NWU falls to 6-5-3 overall and 0-3-1 in the A-R-C. The conference victory is Coe's first since a 1-0 win over Central on October 27, 2015.

It was a free-flowing first 45 minutes but neither team was able to find the opening goal. The Prairie Wolves outshot the Kohawks 16-3 in the first half but only seven of the Nebraska Wesleyan shots tested Coe goalie Connor Teget. Coe recorded three shots on target within the first 19 minutes of play but were unable to muster up any promising scoring chances for the remainder of the half.

Coe began to apply the pressure to Nebraska Wesleyan in the early portion of the second half as the Kohawks broke the tie in the 64th minute. Tanner Buchanan sent his corner into the box and Abdi Abdi corralled the bouncing ball and put it away to put Coe ahead 1-0. Coe did well to fend off the Prairie Wolve's comeback attempt for the final 20 minutes of play. In the 81st minute Teget made a great save from a NWU free kick from just outside the penalty area to keep Coe ahead. The Kohawks controlled the ball and were able to hang on to its first conference victory in nearly four seasons.

Next Up: The Kohawks head to Storm Lake on Saturday for another A-R-C matchup with Buena Vista at 7:30 p.m.
