CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College men's basketball team beat Beloit 84-60 on Saturday afternoon at Kohawk Arena. The win moves Coe to 2-1 overall while Beloit drops to 0-2 on the year. The Kohawks and Bucs played a tight contest for the opening ten minutes of the game but Coe gained control behind a 23-10 run before the halftime break. Coe produced four double-figure scorers while shooting a blistering 58.5 percent from the field and holding Beloit to just 36.7 percent shooting.
Austin Roth (14 pts),
Ivan Morrow (12 pts),
Jacob Robertson (10 pts) and
Tommy Hook (10 pts) all finished with double-digit points while
Zach Niemeyer (9 pts),
TJ Kauffman (8 pts) and
Josh Schmitt (7 pts) added solid production for Coe.
Coe and Beloit battled back-and-forth in the opening eight-plus minutes of the game as the Kohawks led 17-15 after a 3 from Morrow. The Kohawks then picked up the intensity and ripped off an 11-3 run to stretch the lead to 25-18 with just over eight minutes left in the period. Coe's run continued throughout the final minutes of the half, outscoring Beloit 19-4 over the final 5:57 of the period. Coe, which shot 65.2 percent from the floor and 46.2 percent from downtown in the first half, led 44-25 at the break.
The Kohawks were hot again to open the second half, putting together a 16-2 stretch that included 3s from Hook, Robertson, Koffman and Schmitt. Coe, which led 60-27 with 15:53 left to play, stayed hot for the remainder of the afternoon and cruised to its second victory of the season.
