Women’s Basketball Opens Road Schedule With Victory over Spalding

CHICAGO, Illinois — The Coe College women's basketball team opened the road portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 67-50 win over Spalding University. The Kohawks held a comfortable lead throughout most of the contest and withstood a late run from the Golden Eagles to lock up their second win of the year. Coe improves to 2-1 overall while Spalding drops to 0-2 on the year. The Kohawks shot 42.4 percent from the floor and 31.6 percent from downtown while holding Spalding to just 34.8 percent from the floor. Madeline Wilkins (16 pts) paced the Kohawks while Jamie Feldt (14 pts) and Destiny Smith (14 pts) were solid contributors.

The squads opened the contest trading baskets with the Golden Eagles leading 7-6 at the 5:58 mark of the first quarter. Coe went on a short spurt, outscoring Spalding 5-1 in less than two minutes to take the largest lead of the game at three. Spalding then scored five-straight to retake a 13-11 lead but the Kohawks managed to tie the game at 16 prior to the end of one quarter.

The Kohawks opened quarter two with an 13-6 run, stretching their lead all the way to seven at 29-22 just over halfway through the frame. The Golden Eagles stopped the run, but could not get closer to the Coe lead as Spalding trailed 34-26 at the half.

Coe took its first double-digit lead of the game after a pair of free throws from Jackie Feldt kicked off the third quarter but the Golden Eagles refused to go away. A 10-2 run over the next three-plus minutes got Spalding back within two points with just over six minutes to play as Coe led 38-36. The Kohawks regained momentum and outscored the Golden Eagles 15-11 in the remainder of the period to take a six-point lead into the final quarter.

The Kohawks picked up the defensive pressure in the final quarter, shutting the Golden Eagles out for nearly the first half of the period. During the shutout, Coe stretched its lead to 12, the largest of the game. The lead proved to be enough for the Kohawks, as they only gave up three points in the entire final period of play.

Up Next: The Kohawks continue their run at the NPU Tip-Off Tournament tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they face North Park University in the championship game.
