ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Coe College men's basketball team fell 93-79 to WashU on Friday evening in the opening round of the Lopata Classic. The loss drops the Kohawks to 3-2 while the Bears improve to 3-1 on the year. Coe fell behind early in the first half, trailing by as many as 13 points but a late run in the period saw the Kohawks climb within six points with 2:52 to play. Coe continued to fight back in the second half, tying the score at 59 with 13 minutes to play but an 11-0 Bear run gave WashU a lead it held for the remainder of the game. 
 
Jacob Robertson led the Kohawks with 23 points, six rebounds and three assists while hitting five 3s. Josh Schmitt (19 points, three assists) and Adam McDermott (14 points, five assists) added solid production for the Kohawks who shot 44.8 percent from the floor and 40.6 percent from deep.
 
WashU jumped out to an early lead holding a 13 point advantage just over halfway through the frame. Coe then ripped off a 9-2 run which included 3s from Schmitt, Ray Thrapp and Robertson, cutting the deficit to six with 7:44 left in the half. The squads would trade buckets for the final minutes of the first, with Coe scoring the final basket to make it 44-37 at the break. 
 
The Kohawks erupted out of the half, going on an 18-10 spurt in the first five minutes of play to take their first lead of the game at 55-54. WashU and Coe battled back-and-forth in the next few possessions, trading small leads until the 12:31 mark of the second period. The Bears then scored 10 consecutive points to regain control of the contest with just under 10 minutes to play. Despite a solid comeback effort, WashU handled Coe's pressure and went on to secure the victory.
