ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Coe College men's basketball team fell 73-59 to Whitworth on Saturday evening in the Kohawks final game of the Lopata Classic. The loss drops Coe to 3-3 overall while Whitworth improves to 5-1 on the year. The Pirates opened up a double-digit lead midway through the first half and continued to stretch its lead for the remainder of the contest.
Adam McDermott led the squad with 15 points, three rebounds, and one steal while
Zach Niemeyer added 10 points, three boards and two steals.
Both teams struggled out of the gates, as the teams combined for just 12 points over the first five minutes of the period. With an 8-4 lead in hand, the Pirates exploded for 11 consecutive points, stretching their lead to 19-4 with just over nine minutes left in the half. Whitworth continued to extend its lead over the final few minutes of the half, taking a lead as large as 21 points at 33-12. Despite the large deficit, Coe battled back to score the final six points of the half, making the score 33-18 at the break.
The Kohawks run continued early in the second half, as they cut the Pirate lead down to 11 points with three minutes gone in the second period. Whitworth responded with an 11-6 run over the next three and a half minutes of the game to regain control with just over ten minutes to play. Coe continued to battle for the remainder of the contest but Whitworth managed to slow the tempo and control the clock en route to the victory.
Up next: Coe returns to the floor on Tuesday, November 26 when the Kohawks travel to Buena Vista for their opening A-R-C matchup at 7:00 p.m.
