LINCOLN, Neb. – The Coe College women's volleyball team fell 3-2 to Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday evening in the opening round of the American Rivers Conference Tournament. The loss snaps a two-match winning streak for Coe and drops the Kohawks to 15-18 overall. Coe ends the 2019 campaign with a 5-3 record in the A-R-C, a 4-9 record at home, a 3-5 record away from home and an 8-3 record in neutral-site games.

Nebraska Wesleyan jumped out to a hot start, winning the first two sets comfortably. Despite opening slowly, Coe remained calm and won the third set 25-21 to draw closer to the Prairie Wolves. The Kohawks started strong again in the third set, opening a 10-6 lead and forcing an NWU timeout. Coe kept rolling following the break, extending its lead to 17-11 and forcing the Prairie Wolves to take another timeout.

Nebraska Wesleyan took advantage of the timeout this time, ripping off three-straight points to inch closer to Coe, making the score 17-14. The teams traded points for the next few rallies as Coe led 22-18 but a Prairie Wolves service error gave the Kohawks a four-point lead. NWU would score the next point but Coe showed poise and hung on to win the set 25-21 to force a deciding fifth set.

The squads went back-and-forth early in the final set, as the score was tied 5-5. Coe took a slight 6-5 advantage after an attacking error but the Prairie Wolves came up with a kill on the ensuing point to tie the game again. The game remained tight but the Kohawks held an 8-7 lead and controlled the serve when the teams switched sides.

NWU regained a 10-9 lead after scoring two-straight points and forced head coach DeAnn Woodin to take a timeout to stop the run. The Prairie Wolves point-streak continued following the timeout as NWU stretched its lead to three at 12-9, forcing another Coe timeout. Nebraska Wesleyan continued the strong play after the break and would hold on to win the final set 15-10 to advance in the tournament.
