Men’s Basketball Picks Up Dramatic Victory at MacMurray

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Coe College men's basketball team won its second-straight contest with a 73-72 victory over MacMurray College on Monday evening. The win is Coe's second-straight and moves to the Kohawks to 5-4 overall while MacMurray drops to 3-6 on the year. The Kohawks and Highlanders battled back-and-forth for a majority of the contest but a last-second bucket from Jacob Robertson put the Kohawks ahead for good.

Adam McDermott led the squad with 24 points and six boards while Austin Roth (16 points, six boards, and six assists) and Josh Schmitt (14 points and three assists) provided key contributions to lead the Kohawks to victory. Coe forced 14 MacMurray turnovers, converting them into 17 points while committing just 11 turnovers on offense.

Coe and MacMurray traded blows to open the contest but back-to-back 3s from McDermott gave the Kohawks a four-point lead with 14:50 left in the half. The Highlanders scored the next two buckets to cut the lead to just one before Coe ripped off five-straight points to take its largest lead of the game at 18-12 with just over 12 minutes left in the period.

MacMurray fought back, putting together an 11-3 stretch over the next three-plus minutes to take hold of the lead for the first time in the game. The Highlander run continued as they stretched their lead to five with 6:43 left in the frame but a 9-2 Kohawk run flipped the script and gave Coe the lead once again with under four minutes left in the first half. The teams then traded baskets for the remainder of the period, as Coe held a slight 37-35 lead after 20 minutes of game action.

Coe had a strong opening to the second half, increasing its lead to 11 points just over halfway through the period. Despite their largest deficit of the game, the Highlanders began to chip away at the lead, ripping off a 13-4 spurt to close within two points of the lead with 5:21 left in the game.

Coe and MacMurray would trade baskets for the remainder of the period but a layup from Drew Burwinkel gave the Highlanders a one-point lead with just 15 seconds to play in the game. Following a timeout from head coach Bryan Martin, Coe drove the length of the floor and got a game-winning layup from Robertson with under two seconds to play.

Up next: Coe heads south to Florida to compete in the Cruzin Classic this weekend, beginning with a matchup on Friday evening against Concordia (Wis.) at 1 p.m.
