Men’s Basketball Splits Two Games at Cruzin Classic

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fl. – The Coe College men's basketball team split a pair of non-conference games this weekend at the Cruzin Classic, falling to Concordia (Wis.) 91-86 in overtime on Friday while taking down Randolph College 70-54 this morning. The results move to the Kohawks to 6-5 overall while they remain 1-1 in the A-R-C as they prepare to break for the holiday.

Sunday 12-22, W 70-54 - Randolph College

Coe controlled the contest from the opening tip, as Austin Roth scored a team and game-high 26 points while adding three rebounds, three assists, and one steal. TJ Kauffman added 11 points, going 3-of-5 from downtown while Jacob Robertson eclipsed the double-figure mark with 10 points. Six other Kohawks recorded points in the game as Coe shot 45.9 percent from the floor and 37.9 from downtown while holding Randolph to 35.3 from the floor and 22.7 from beyond the arc.

The Kohawks had a solid start to Sunday's game against Randolph, ripping off a 14-6 spurt over the first six-plus minutes of the half. The Wildcats responded well to Coe's hot start, scoring eight-straight points to tie the score at 14 with 12:36 left in the first half but the Kohawks then put together a 16-6 outburst to take their largest lead of the game at 30-20. Randolph continued to scrap but the Kohawks were efficient enough on offense to maintain the double-digit lead for a majority of the second half. The Wildcats cut the lead to nine points before the break with a 3 from CJ Loving, making the score 42-33 after one period.

Again, Coe started the half well, pushing its lead out to 21 points just over six minutes into the second frame. With a comfortable lead the Kohawks continued to play solid defense holding the Wildcats to only 13 points in the opening 10 minutes of the period, as Coe's lead remained in double-figures for the remainder of the game.

Friday 12-20, L 91-86 (OT) - Concordia (Wis.)

Concordia opened the contest on fire, ripping off a 12-2 run in the first four minutes of the contest. Coe quickly fought back, scoring eight of the next ten points, capped off by a 3 from Adam McDermott to get within four points of the lead at 14-10. The Falcons ended the Coe run with a spurt of their own, putting together a 9-1 stretch over a three-minute period, pushing their lead to double-digits for the first time in the game. The back-and-forth action would continue for the remainder of the half but the Kohawks closed the frame on a 25-14 run to get within one point of the Concordia lead at the break.

It was Coe who began the second half hot, scoring eight of the opening ten points of the period, securing a five-point lead with 16:50 left in the game. The Kohawks continued to control the game for a majority of the initial part of the half, pushing their lead to nine points after back-to-back buckets by Sam Auen and Ray Thrapp with less than nine minutes remaining. The Falcons fought back over the next few minutes, getting consecutive three-point plays to cut the deficit to two points with just over four minutes to play. Jacob Robertson put the Kohawks back up for with a layup on the ensuing possession but then squads both went through a scoreless stretch for nearly three minutes as Coe continued to hold a 69-65 with under a minute to play.

Josh Schmitt split two free throws after he was fouled putting Coe up 70-65 but Jared Jurss made things more interesting with a 3 to once again cut the deficit to just two points with 40 seconds on the clock. Following a series of turnovers and missed free throws, Concordia had one final chance to tie it with four seconds left. Jurss came up clutch again with a game-tying layup as time expired, sending the contest to overtime where the Falcons outscored the Kohawks 21-16 to lock up the win.

Up next: The Kohawks break for the holiday and return to action on January 2nd when Coe will travel to Buena Vista for a makeup game against the Beavers at 7:30 p.m.
