CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Coe College Athletic Director
Sonny Travis announced his resignation on Monday afternoon. Travis will depart from Coe after leading the Athletic Department through a variety of transitions during his three-year tenure. His resignation will take effect on December 31.
"It has been rewarding leading Coe Athletics and working with the coaches and athletic staff," said Travis. "It was a privilege to work with such an amazing group of student-athletes. I want to thank Coe College for this opportunity. An added bonus was coaching this past season and moving the men's soccer program forward. Coe Athletics is in a good place, and this is the right timing for me to move on to my next chapter."
Travis, who took over in 2017 oversaw a few key projects for Coe Athletics including the opening of the A-R-C complex and Kohawk Arena while also helping introduce four new sports at Coe in men's volleyball, women's triathlon, co-ed clay target, and women's bowling. Sonny also helped lead an athletic department that had two of the best recruiting years in school history including record numbers during the 2017 & 2018 seasons. Travis oversaw the addition and hiring of full-time coaches for all of Coe's teams while helping increase corporate sponsorships for athletics.
During his time as AD, the Kohawks improved their overall ranking in the American Rivers Conference All-Sports Trophy competition jumping up to sixth place, just one point shy of the fifth spot. Travis also served as the interim men's soccer head coach during the 2019 season, leading Coe to its best season in recent history, winning seven games, just one shy of the school record.
