BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The 2019 record-breaking Coe baseball season came to an end Saturday when Birmingham Southern defeated the Kohawks, 11-2, to claim a berth in the NCAA Division III Baseball World Series.
After Friday's extra-inning loss to the Panthers, Coe needed to win twice on Saturday to play next week in their own back yard at the DIII World Series, but Birmingham Southern put together a pair of multiple-run innings to take control Saturday and sweep of the best-of-three series.
Starting pitcher Jack Greene (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) did not allow a hit through the first two innings, but Birmingham Southern got to the junior southpaw with a run on two hits in the third.
Coe tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth. Daniel Berger (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) drew a one-out walk and later advanced to second. TJ Johnson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie ) delivered a two-out single to score Berger and tie the game at 1.
The Panthers countered though with three in their half of the fourth and then added six runs in the fifth to take a 10-1 lead on the Kohawks. BSC would maintain the nine-run advantage at game's end.
The loss though will not dampen the memorable season Coe put together in 2019. The team's 37 wins were a program record, besting the 34 wins the club set in 2015. Their .822 winning percentage (37-8) is best in the nation. The squad won their first regular season conference championship since 2011 with an amazing 22-2 American Rivers Conference record. Kevin DeLaney (Coralville, Iowa/West) became the program's all-time hits leader, amassing a four-year total of 238 hits. Ten players earned All-A-R-C honors and seven received D3Baseball.com All-Central Region accolades. Zach Kammin (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) was named A-R-C Pitcher of the Year and head coach Steve Cook was named both A-R-C Coach of the Year and D3Baseball.com All-Central Region Coach of the Year.
