Kohawks Intercollegiate and Club Sports to expand in 2020

9/14/2019 9:34:00 AM

Cedar Rapids, Iowa – The Coe College Athletic and Recreation Department is proud to announce the addition of four varsity sports and four club sports. They were officially made public at the 25th Anniversary of the Barron Bremner Outstanding Athlete Award Ceremony, hosted in the Kohawk Arena on campus Friday night, September 13, 2019.

The new varsity sports include Women's Bowling, Women's Triathlon, Men's Volleyball, and Co-ed Clay Target, bringing the varsity sports total from 21 to 25. New club sports include Men's Bowling, Men's Triathlon, Co-ed Archery, and Co-ed Climbing club.

Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Club and Intramural Sports, Joelle Rummel, noted that the theory behind the expansions was from research in the Iowa High School Athletic system, participation growth across the nation and other schools in the conference. For example, archery and clay target sports are two of the fastest growing sports in Iowa and we're excited to be able to add these sports to our program offerings.

The department expansions were made possible thanks to contributions made by the College Board of Trustees matching a generous challenge gift from by life trustee John Strohm '79 and Mary Pat Link, trustee Kristin Strohm '05, and other members of the Strohm family.

Coe Athletics will be advertising immediately for the coaching positions for their inaugural seasons for all of the new sports.  Current Women's Tennis Head Coach, Kris Tiedt, will be the head coach of Women's Triathlon.  Tiedt has served as an instructor of triathlon training since Coe added this as a class offering in spring of 2014. Tiedt is currently obtaining her Level I USA Triathlon coaching license.
