Kohawks shutout Rams for Bremner Cup point

Cedar Rapids, Iowa – The first night game in the history of Clark Field turned in to a rare Sunday game after the weather postponed the game. That was about the only thing that didn't go as planned though as Coe dominated Cornell for a 38-0 win. The win was the 20th straight Kohawk win over the Rams.

It wasn't Saturday, it wasn't started under the lights, but it was still Coe-Cornell with a Bremner Cup point on the line. The oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi was played on Sunday after lightning postponed the Saturday night game. After waiting 22 hours for the game to start the Kohawks didn't wait long to take control of the game. Coe scored early and often in the first half as they jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead.

Cornell won the coin flip and deferred giving Coe the play to start the game. The Kohawks took advantage of having the ball first as they drove the field to score on the opening possession of the game. Tyler Dralle capped of the 11-play opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run just five and half minutes into the game. Coe added to their lead late in the first quarter on Quentin White's first of three touchdown passes. White found Cody Russell down the middle of the field for a 30-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 14-0 after the first quarter.

The second quarter didn't start as fast for the Kohawks but it finished with a flurry of points. Coe scored on three straight possessions to close out the half. White connected with twin brother, Colton White, for an eight-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter. After the defense forced a quick three and out Coe struck quick on a two-play drive that took less than a minute. White found Joshua Bishop for a 40-yard touchdown. Eric Aguilar point an exclamation point on the scoring frenzy with a 56-yard punt return for a touchdown just before halftime.

Coming out of the locker room in complete control the Kohawks slowed things down in the second half. After a sloppy third quarter that saw the Kohawks turn it over twice Coe got the final points of the game late in the fourth quarter on a 21-yard Tristen Connell field goal.

The defense was dominated all night as they gave up only five first downs and forced four Ram turnovers in the shutout. The 38-0 shutout was the largest shut out in the series since Coe 40-0 win back in 1911. It was the first shutout since 1989. Coe gave up only 104 total yards while gaining 397.

The Coe linebackers lead the team in tackles with Brody Bohr leading the way with six tackles while Sam Moreland and Brian Robertson add five and three respectively. Alex Frenandez and Cedric Nah created havoc up front. Frenandez record one and a half sacks and Nah had a sack. Desi Wiley had an interception and Hunter Semelroth had two interceptions. Semelroth's first inception made him only the third player in the 20-year win streak to have an interception in back-to-back years.

Quentin White completed 20-27 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns. Colton White proved to be the top target in this game with eight receptions for 88 yards and a touchdown. Russell added three catches for 32 yards and a touchdown while Bishop had the one long reception for 40 yards and a score. Mitch Stopko lead the way on the ground with 70 yards on 14 carries. Monico Requena add 51 yards on his eight second half carries.

Coe was presented with the Bremner Cup trophy at halftime of the game after winning last year's all sports competition by a margin of 11-3. The Kohawks own a 5-2 series edge since the battle for the cup started in 2012. The win tonight gives Coe a 2-1 lead in this years competition.

Coe will begin conference play on Saturday, September 21, when they travel to Loras College. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Rock Bowl Stadium in Dubuque.
