STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team kicked off the new decade with a 73-56 victory over A-R-C opponent Buena Vista on Thursday evening. The Kohawks and Beavers were tied at 22 after one quarter but Coe outscored Buena Vista 36-19 in the second and third quarters to take control of the contest. The victory moves the Kohawks to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the A-R-C while BV drops to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in the A-R-C.
Jackie Feldt scored a game-high 26 points for Coe while adding six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Twin sister
Jamie Feldt scored 18 points for the Kohawks, chipping in eight rebounds, four assists, and two blocks while hitting six-of-seven free throws in the contest. As a team, Coe shot 53.4 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from downtown while holding the Beavers to just 35.6 percent from the field.
Coe had a strong opening to the contest, ripping off an 8-3 stretch over the first three-plus minutes. Buena Vista fought back despite the Kohawks hot start, scoring five-straight to tie the game at eight with just under six minutes left in the period. The squads would trade baskets a majority of the final minutes of the quarter, but BVU used a 6-2 run to take a four-point lead with 1:16 left in the first. Coe scored the final four points of the quarter, tying the score at 22 after free throws from

The Kohawks picked up the defensive intensity in the second quarter, outscoring the Beavers 15-5 in the frame. Coe and Buena Vista traded buckets to kick off the period but Coe then ripped off a 12-0 outburst over the next 7:16 to hold its largest lead of the game at 37-24 with 1:49 left in the half. The Beavers finally broke the scoreless stretch with 57 seconds left in the second quarter thanks to a 3 pointer from Destiny Einerwold, cutting Coe's halftime lead to 10 points.
Coe took control of the game early in the third quarter, scoring the first ten points of the quarter and pushing its lead to 20 points with just under eight minutes to play in the third. Buena Vista began to chip away at the Coe lead, scoring 12 of the next 16 points to cut the deficit to 12 points with just over two minutes left in the frame. Despite the stretch from the BV, Coe scored the final five points of the quarter to increase its lead back to 58-41 after three quarters.
Once again, Coe had a strong start to the quarter, going on an 8-4 run over the first 3:42 of the period to put the game out of reach for the Beavers. The Kohawks were able to handle the Beavers for the remainder of the contest and controlled the tempo to secure the victory.
Up next: The Kohawks continue American Rivers Conference play on Saturday, January 4 when they travel to Pella for a matchup with the Central College Dutch at 2:00 p.m.
