Women’s Basketball Uses Strong Third Quarter to Get Past Central

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team defeated Central 71-61 on Saturday afternoon at Kohawk Arena. The Kohawks held a slim one-point lead at the halftime break but outscored the Dutch 19-9 in the third quarter to take control of the contest. The victory moves Coe to 11-7 overall and 6-3 in the league while the Dutch drop to 11-7 and 3-6 in the A-R-C. Junior guard Jackie Feldt had a stellar day for the Kohawks, just missing out on a triple-double. She totaled 22 points, nine boards and eight assists while coming up with four steals and two blocks.

Both teams struggled to find the mark out of the gate, combining for just four buckets in the opening two-plus minutes of the game as the score was tied 4-4 with 7:43 remaining in the frame. The Dutch settled in at this point and ripped off a 10-4 spurt to take the largest lead of the game at 14-8 with just under three to play in the quarter.

Coe answered the Dutch run with one of its own, scoring eight-straight points behind 3s from Alyse Southard and Jamie Feldt to flip the script and take a two-point lead with under a minute left in the quarter. Central controlled the final possession of the period and turned to its leading scorer Kendall Brown who converted a layup to tie the score at 16 before the break.

Central and Coe both settled into the contest early on in the second, trading buckets over the opening five minutes of action with the Kohawks holding a slight one-point advantage mid-way through the frame. Neither team could separate from the other for the remainder of the period as Coe continued to hold a one-point lead after 20 minutes of play.

The squads continued to struggle offensively after the break, scoring just 15 points combined in the first five-plus minutes of the frame. The Kohawks finally took control of the game with a 13-0 outburst over the next four minutes thanks to four buckets from Jackie Feldt and a 3 from Madeline Wilkins, putting them in front 52-39 with 27 seconds left in the third.

Expectedly, Central showed toughness in the first few minutes of the fourth, opening with a 10-2 spurt to immediately cut the Coe lead to three with just under seven minutes to play in the game. Despite seeing its lead diminish quickly Coe showed no panic and put together a 9-2 run to push its advantage back to ten points at the 3:07 mark of the frame. The Dutch continued to fight down the stretch but the Kohawks showed poise and secured their sixth league victory of the year.

Up next: Coe will be back in action this Wednesday when they travel to Wartburg for a mid-week matchup with the Knights at 5:30 p.m.
