Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Falls at Dubuque 90-85

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Coe College men's basketball team saw its three game winning-streak snapped by Dubuque in a 90-85 loss on Wednesday evening. Coe held a four point lead after one half but the Spartans made an early run in the second to get back into the contest. The teams battled for the remainder of the game but UD scored some clutch buckets down the stretch to lock up the victory. The loss drops Coe to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the A-R-C while Dubuque moves to 9-4 and 2-2 in the league.

Austin Roth led the Kohawks with 22 points, three boards and three assists as Jacob Robertson, Josh Schmitt and Adam McDermott all reached double-figures.

UD started the first half strong, scoring 11 of the opening 15 points to take early control. The Kohawks got back into the game after Roth hit a 3 but the Spartans answered with back-to-back long balls to push the lead to double-figures with just under 14 minutes left int the opening half. Coe and Dubuque traded buckets for the next few minutes until the Kohawks ripped off nine-straight points to cut the deficit just one point at the 8:43 mark of the half.

The Spartans responded with a dunk on the other end but that did not stop the Kohawks, who ripped off another 9-0 run, taking a six-point lead with less than six minutes left in the first. Both teams settled into the contest with around five minutes left in the half, exchanging baskets for the remainder of the period as Coe led 39-35 after 20 minutes of action.

Dubuque had another good start to the half, immediately eliminating the Kohawk lead before the 17 minute mark of the frame. The Spartans and Kohawks then traded baskets for the next few minutes with neither team taking a lead larger than three until UD scored four-straight points to take a 60-55 lead with 13:16 left in the game. Dubuque continued to stretch its lead with a layup and 3-point bucket, taking a ten-point advantage with 12 minutes left.

The Spartans protected their lead well over the next few minutes as the Kogawks could not cut the deficit to single-digits before the 8-minute mark. The Coe run finally came as the Kohawks ripped off a 9-3 outburst to get within right points with just under six minutes left. Coe got as close as six points after back-to-back 3s with 3:15 to play in the game but the Spartans controlled the tempo and saw out the victory.

Up next: Coe will take a short break this weekend and return to action next Wednesday at Nebraska Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.
