CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball cruised past Dubuque on Wednesday evening, winning 81-72 over the Spartans. The Kohawks held a 13-point lead after the opening 20 minutes and saw out the lead in the second half to lock up their third-straight win. The victory moves Coe to 15-9 overall and 10-5 in the league while Dubuque drops to 14-10 and 7-8 in the American Rivers Conference.
Senior
Adam McDermott again led the Kohawks in scoring with 21 points, adding six boards, two assists and two steals.
Jacob Robertson joined him in double-figures with 16 points as
Josh Schmitt (10 points) and
Jarad Kruse (11 points) also reached the mark. Overall, the Kohawks shot 47 percent from the floor and a scorching 46 percent from downtown, connecting on 12-of-26 attempts from beyond.
Dubuque opened the contest with a 5-2 advantage thanks to an early 3 from Cade Daugherty but the Kohawks answered back with 10 consecutive points including seven from McDermott. Leading 12-5, Coe saw UD score five-straight points to cut the lead to three with 14:34 remaining in the opening quarter. Kruse
answered on the following possession with a layup for the Kohawks, kickstarting a 16-6 outburst which lasted nearly seven minutes.
The stretch gave Coe its largest lead of the game at 13 points with 7:37 left in the first but UD scored the next 11 points of the game to immediately cut the lead to two. Despite seeing their lead evaporate, the Kohawks stayed cool and put together quarter-ending 18-7 spurt to take a 13-point lead into the break.
Coe and Dubuque traded blows in the opening moments of the second half but the Kohawks finally began to break away at the 16-minute mark. The Kohawks used a 7-3 run to push their lead to 17 points at 61-44 but the Spartans answered again, this time with a 17-8 outburst over a nearly nine-minute stretch. The stretch cut the Coe lead to just eight points with 5:05 left in the game until it answered with a 9-2 run to put the game out of reach for the Spartans with 2:41 to play. UD did end the contest on a 9-2 spurt but the Spartans ran out of time as the Kohawks secured the victory.
Up next: The Kohawks are back in action this weekend for their final regular-season game as they take on Luther College in Decorah, Iowa at 4 p.m.
