Women’s Basketball Defeats Dubuque Behind Strong Third Quarter

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team won 71-57 over Dubuque on Wednesday evening, improving its win streak to three games. The teams both struggled offensively in the first half but the Kohawks outscored the Spartans 23-10 in the third quarter en route to the victory. With the win, Coe improves to 15-9 overall and 10-5 in the American Rivers Conference while Dubuque drops to 7-17 and 3-12 in the league.

Jackie Feldt led the Kohawks in scoring, finishing with 25 points while adding seven boards, four assists, two steals and one block. Junior guard Madeline Wilkins totaled 18 points, knocked down six 3s, adding one rebound, one assist and one steal in nearly 30 minutes of action. As a team, Coe shot 46.9 percent from the floor and 34.8 percent from downtown while holding the Spartans to just 18.2 percent from downtown.

The Kohawks and Spartans both started slowly in their second matchup of the year, combining for just three points in the first three minutes of the contest. Coe then ripped off six-straight points which featured back-to-back 3s from Wilkins to take a 7-2 lead. The offensive struggles continued throughout the rest of the first quarter with the teams totaling just eight field goals in the period. Despite the offensive woes, the Kohawk defense proved tough on the Spartans as Coe led 12-10 after 10 minutes of action.

Coe opened the second quarter on fire, outscoring Dubuque 8-3 in the opening minutes to extend its lead to seven half-way through the frame. UD stayed within striking distance over the next few possessions, using a 7-3 to cut Coe's lead to four with just under two minutes to play in the half. The Spartans continued to claw away at the lead, scoring six of the final 11 points in the quarter to make it a three-point game at the break.

Coe buckled down in the third quarter and began to take control of the contest, opening with an 8-2 outburst to push the lead quickly to nine. Kennedy Litvinoff ended the Kohawk run with a 3 for UD but the Kohawks showed no signs of slowing down ripping off another 10-3 spurt to grab their first double-digit lead of the game. Leading by 13, Coe scored five of the final seven points of the frame to hold a 16 point lead after three periods.

The lead continued to stretch for Coe in the first two minutes of the final quarter as it increased to 19 points before the eight-minute mark. UD refused to quit down the stretch, bringing the defensive pressure for the remaining moments but the Kohawks handled the pressure and secured the victory.

Up Next: Coe returns to the floor on Saturday for its final game of the regular season at Luther College at 2 p.m. in Decorah, Iowa.
