Box Score 4 CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team split four dual matches with Webster, Central, Grand View and Division 2 Quincy on Saturday and Sunday at Clark Racquet Center. On Saturday, the Kohawks opened the day with a narrow 5-4 victory over Webster but fell 7-2 to Central in match two. Coe again won the first match of the day on Sunday, picking up an 8-1 victory over Grand View but it fell 9-0 to the Quincy in the evening match.
Webster kicked off Saturday morning's doubles competition confidently, winning two of the three matches to hold the slight advantage heading into singles.
Michaela Pinto/Christine Puleo provided the Kohawks lone point from doubles, picking up an 8-7 victory at #3 doubles.
Despite the slow start in doubles, Coe answered to win four of six singles matches to pull off the comeback victory.
Eliza Sundermann opened the action with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at #1 while
Ella White won 6-3, 6-1 at #3 to give the Kohawks three points.
Sophia Craig then picked up another victory for Coe at #5 singles, defeating her opponent 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 to put the Kohawks in position for the victory. Pinto clinched the match for Coe, as she won 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 at #6 to secure the victory.
The Kohawks were back at it on Sunday morning, hosting in-state opponent Grand View. They started hot in doubles play, sweeping the competition while dropping just 11 total points. Sundermann/
Emma Lassen picked up an 8-3 win at #1, White/Craig secured an 8-6 victory at #2 and Puleo/
Breeana Runyon won 8-2 at #3 to make it a clean sweep in doubles. Coe's dominance continued into singles play where it won five of the six matches to lock up the victory over Grand View. Coe got wins from Lassen at #2, White at #3, Puleo at #4, Craig at #5 and Runyon at #6.
Coe's opponent in the evening match proved to be much tougher, as Division 2 opponent Quincy swept the Kohawks 9-0. Despite the uneven scoreline, Coe battled throughout the whole contest, keeping a majority of the matches tight in doubles and singles play. White was solid in her singles match but fell just short in the tie-breaker as the Hawks secured the victory.
Up next: Coe will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts UW-Oshkosh and Augustana at Clark Racquet Center.
