Volleyball’s Comeback Attempt Falls Just Short Against #5 Wartburg

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College volleyball team fought back from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set but the undefeated and fifth-ranked Wartburg College Knights hung on for a 3-2 victory over Coe. The Knights dominated the opening two periods, winning 25-18 and 25-19 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match but the Kohawks battled back to win the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-20. In the final set, Coe opened up a 10-5 advantage but Wartburg fought back and claimed a 17-15 victory to secure the win. The result drops the Kohawks to 18-7 on the year and 5-1 in the A-R-C while Wartburg improves to 22-0 overall and 6-0 in league play.

Match Facts
  • Coe struggled offensively in the opening frame, hitting just .024 as a team while committing nine errors. Madi Parson led the team with four kills, posting an attack percentage of .286 as well as chipping in with a block assist. The Knights hit just .190 but committed only six errors while adding two service aces to jump ahead 1-0. 
  • Wartburg jumped out to an early lead in the second set, taking a 13-6 advantage and forcing a Koahwk timeout. Out of the break, Coe chipped away at the lead, cutting it to four after a service ace from Parson. The Knights handled the spurt from the Kohawks and saw out the victory, earning a 25-19 win in the set to take a 2-0 advantage. Kate Tidman led the offense in the period, hitting .267 with five kills and just one error. 
  • The Kohawks bounced back in the third set, hitting .122 in the period while forcing seven errors for the Knights. Grace Lueken and Tidman led the offensive charge for Coe in the frame, posting four kills each while Gracie Urbatsch chipped in with two. Majda Suljic had an excellent serving run, posting four service aces in the period while Parson and Kinsie Zinnel added one for Coe. 
  • Wartburg and Coe battled back and forth in the fourth set but the Knights took control at 11-8 after scoring two straight. Following a timeout, Coe scored five of six points to flip the switch and regain a 13-12 lead while also forcing Wartburg into its own timeout. Coe continued to build upon the lead after the break, stretching its advantage to 20-17 after a kill from Tidman as the lead proved enough for the Kohawks to tie the match at two. Tidman had a team-high eight kills in the period, hitting .250 while Lueken pitched in with five kills for Coe. 
  • Coe took an early lead in the final frame, holding an 8-5 advantage before a timeout was called by Wartburg. The margin stayed at three for the Kohawks, who held a 12-9 lead over Wartburg but the Knights clawed back, scoring five of seven points to tie the match at 14. The Knights eventually scored back-to-back points to secure the victory as Zaiah Quirk recorded a pair of kills for Wartburg which remained undefeated with the win. 
Up next: Coe will return to the court on Friday, October 22 for an American Rivers Conference match against Central College at 6 PM.
