CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College football team rolled to a 63-7 victory over Luther College on Homecoming Saturday at Clark Field. The Kohawks scored 16 points in the opening quarter to take command of the contest and stretched the advantage to 30 before the halftime break. Coe continued to push the lead after the half, scoring 23 points in the second period to roll to victory. The Kohawks threw for 283 yards on the afternoon and added 216 rushing yards while holding the Norse to just 211 total yards and ten first downs. The victory is Coe's second straight and moves the Kohawks to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the A-R-C while Luther falls to 0-8 overall and 0-6 in league play.
The rushing attack was led by
Alphonso Soko, who ran for 95-yards on 12 carries while cashing in two touchdowns for the Kohawks.
Chance Newton also pitched in with 69-yards on the ground including a 57-yard score in the third quarter.
Ray Seidel made it three Kohawks with 50-plus rushing yards and he added 52-yards on 12 carries, adding one touchdown in the second quarter. The Kohawks turned to three quarterbacks in the comfortable win as the trio combined for 283-yards and three touchdown passes.
Nick Casey, who got the start again for Coe, was 7-of-12 for 112-yards and one touchdown before leaving the game with an injury.
Defensively, Coe was led by
Manny Lopez who posted a team-high six tackles while
Beau Van Berkum, Jay Oostendorp and
Ben Ridenour had five tackles each. Coe also had six tackles for loss in the game including 1.5 TFLs for
Alex Aitchison. The Kohawk defense stifled the passing game of Luther, turning over the Norse four times in the game with four interceptions. The big play of the game came in the first quarter as
Trey Holub picked off the Luther Quarterback at Coe's 37-yard line and returned it to the house to put Coe ahead 16-0.

GAME FACTS
- Coe scored on its opening drive of the game, driving 47-yards over 12 plays before having to settle for a field goal from 29-yards out. Evan Ellis converted on the mid-range field to put the Kohawks ahead 3-0 with 10:45 to play in the first.
- The first touchdown of the game came with 5:39 left in the first quarter as Casey hooked up with Dominic Shepardson for a 35-yard score as Shepardson caught a short pass down the middle and snuck past a pair of Luther defenders for a free race to the end zone. The defense stepped on the ensuing possession and forced their first turnover of the game as Holub made the big play to put Coe up 16-0 at the end of one quarter.
- The Kohawks and Norse traded turnovers early in the second quarter but the Kohawks capitalized after a fumble recovery by Jon Bell which gave Coe the ball at Luther's 27. Just three plays later the Kohawks cashed in as Soko rushed for a 23-yard score down the left sideline to put Coe ahead 23-0.
- After three scoreless possessions, Coe managed to strike again, as Seidel scored on a 12-yard burst to cap off a seven play, 66-yard drive for the Kohawks. During the drive, Matt Walton, who entered for an injured Casey, connected with Joshua Bishop for completions of 15 and 10 yards which helped move Coe into scoring territory.
- The lead grew early in the third quarter for the Kohawks as Soko notched his second score of the day from one yard out after a 42-yard spurt earlier in the drive to set up the score. Following three scoreless possessions, the Kohawks struck again as Newton ran 57-yards untouched for Coe's fourth rushing score of the day.
- The Kohawks fielded a punt to start the fourth quarter as they were set up with excellent field position inside Norse territory. Three plays later, Cater Maske, dumped a pass down to Lance Vaughn who caught it and ran for a 48-yard touchdown as Coe went up 49-0. The defense struck again on Luther's first play of the ensuing drive, picking off the Norse again as Darrius Saunders gave the offense the ball at the Luther 16. The Kohawks added another rushing touchdown three plays later as Mohamed Akahrir scored his first of the year from one yard out. The final score of the game for Coe came with 8:46 to play as Maske hooked up with Hunter Jeffrey for a 14-yard score to put the Kohawks ahead 63-0. Luther finally got on the board with 2:32 to play in the game, scoring a one-yard touchdown on fourth down to end the shutout from the Kohawk defense.
