Women’s Basketball Suffers First Defeat of Season to Augustana

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season to non-conference opponent Augustana in the final game of its own home tournament. The Kohawks got off to a good start in the opening quarter, outscoring the visitors 18-14 in the first period but the Vikings answered back with a 20-9 second quarter to hold a 34-27 advantage at the break. Augustana continued the strong play in the third quarter and fought off numerous Coe comeback attempts down the stretch for the victory. The loss drops Coe to 2-1 overall while Augustana improves to 3-0 on the season.

  • Augustana opened with the lead in the first quarter, using back-to-back buckets to grab an early 9-4 advantage. Coe battled back with back-to-back 3s thanks to Alyse Southard and Molly Buck, pushing the Kohawks ahead 10-9 with 4:39 to play in the first. The Kohawks had a strong ending to the period, getting another pair of 3s from Buck as she gave Coe an 18-14 lead after one.
  • The Vikings quickly got back in the game, using a 3 to cut the deficit to one before an old-fashioned three-point play put the visitors in front by two. Augustana then used a 12-7 spurt to end the quarter as it led by double-digits until a late 3 from Buck cut Coe's halftime deficit to just seven. 
  • Augustana's lead grew early in the third quarter as Coe struggled offensively. The Vikings scored the first seven points of the period to push their lead to 14 points with 7:55 left in the third and used a pair of 3s to increase the advantage to 18 before the midway point. The visitors ended the period with another big run, scoring 11 of the next 17 points to increase the lead by 23 after the third. 
  • Coe got the deficit down to 16 just over three minutes into the final quarter after buckets from Kaalyn Petersen, Katie Wilhelmi and Buck but a 3 from the Vikings pushed it back to 19. The Kohawks continued to battle, cutting the lead to just 13 with 6:07 left in the game which proved as close as the hosts could get with the Vikings fending off numerous comeback attempts with key baskets.
