Defense Dominates in Men’s Basketball’s Conference-Opening Victory at Luther

DECORAH, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team opened its American Rivers Conference schedule with a 58-34 victory at Luther College on Tuesday night. The Kohawks held the Norse to just 14 points in the first period as the hosts shot only 18 percent from the floor while Coe was 46 percent in the opening frame. The defensive dominance continued for Coe in the second half as it held Luther to 20 points while keeping it under 40 percent from the floor. The victory moves the Kohawks to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the A-R-C while the Norse fall to 1-4 on the season and 0-1 in the league.

Game Facts
  • The teams battled back and forth early on in the first half as Luther held a narrow 7-6 lead after five minutes of action but Coe took a five-point lead after a 6-1 run before the 12-minute mark. The game then went scoreless for nearly two minutes until a 3 from Greg Hall broke the stretch, kickstarting another Coe run. 
  • The lead continued to stretch over the next few minutes for the visitors who took a 26-12 advantage after a layup from Sam Auen. Coe scored the final bucket of the half with 18 seconds remaining as John Steffen connected on a jumper to give his team a 28-14 lead after one period. 
  • Coe pushed its lead past 20 points early in the second half, scoring 12 of the first 16 points of the frame to grab a 40-18 lead. The defense continued to stagger the Norse attack, allowing the lead to extend to 30 points with just over six minutes to play as leading-scorer Jarad Kruse added a layup for the Kohawks. The squads then settled in for the remaining moments of the game, trading buckets as Coe saw out the victory to open conference play on the right foot.  
Up next: Coe is back in action on Saturday, November 27 when it hosts non-conference opponent Edgewood College at Kohawk Arena with tip-off scheduled for 2 PM.
