#16 Simpson Takes Down Women’s Basketball at Kohawk Arena on Saturday Afternoon

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team dropped an A-R-C contest to 14th-ranked Simpson College on Saturday afternoon, falling 91-71 to the Storm at Kohawk Arena. The Storm and Kohawks battled in the first few minutes of the opening quarter but the visitors took control with an 18-5 run to end the quarter. Coe remained resilient in the game despite Simpson pushing its past 20 points, clawing back within 15 points early in the fourth quarter but Simpson weathered the storm and secured the victory. The loss drops Coe to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the A-R-C while Simpson improves to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.
 
Katie Wilhelmi led the offense for Coe, scoring a team and season-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting while knocking down six of her seven free throw attempts. Kaalyn Petersen recorded her second-straight double-double and fifth of the season, posting 12 points and 10 boards in 30 minutes of action. Freshman guard Ellie Wisner also reached double-figures, scoring 11 points while adding three assists in the game.

Game Facts
  • The teams traded buckets in the first minute of the game but Coe grabbed an early 3-2 advantage after a 3 from Alyse Southard but the Storm answered with an 8-2 run to regain the advantage with 7:23 left in the frame. Molly Buck got the Kohawks back within three points of the Storm with a floater to make it 10-7. Both offenses continued to click but the visitors were on fire, ending the opening quarter with a 24-12 stretch during which it shot 8-of-14 from the field and 2-of-4 from deep as Simpson held a 34-19 lead after one. 
  • The teams went back-and-forth in the first five minutes of the second period but Simpson slightly edged Coe, outscoring the hosts 8-6 over the stretch to lead 17 with just over five minutes to play. The Storm continued to fire offensively, using a 12-6 spurt to end the half with a 54-31 lead as Simpson shot 51.2 percent from the floor in the opening half. 
  • The lead quickly grew for the Storm in the first few minutes of the third quarter, using a 9-4 run to push the lead to 28 with 5:57 remaining in the frame. Coe refused to quit despite its largest deficit of the game, ending the period with an 18-10 run to cut the lead to 20 points heading into the final quarter.
  • Coe continued to fight back at the start of the fourth, outscoring Simpson 7-2 in the first two-plus minutes of action as a 3 from Meagan Harvey made it 75-60 with 7:24 to play in the game. Simpson weathered the storm for the final minutes of the contest, securing the victory with a game-ending 16-11 run. 
Up next: Coe will return to action next Saturday, December 11 when it travels to Pella for an A-R-C matchup with Central at 2 PM.
