Men's Basketball Comeback Effort Falls Short Against Buena Vista

Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought contest to Buena Vista University inside Kohawk Arena on Senior Night. The Kohawks battled back to take its first lead of the game with seconds remaining but a goaltending call on the ensuing possession gave the Beavers the win. Coe falls to 2-3 overall and in conference play, while Buena Vista improves to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. 
 
Cael Schmitt guided the Kohawk comeback effort with 15 points, ten of which came in the second half along with six assists. Ray Thrapp contributed 12 points and six rebounds in the effort while Sam Auen added 11 points. 
 
The Beavers started the game hot with a 14-0 run, en route to shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half. The Kohawks didn't get on the board until six minutes into the frame which helped to stop the bleeding. Buena Vista took their largest lead of the contest into the locker room at 39-23. Thrapp and Schmitt led the way for the Kohawks in the first half with five points each. Jacob Robertson collected four rebounds. 
 
The Beavers kept the pressure on to start the second half, but the Kohawks would bring the fight. A Robertson steal at half court led to a fast-break layup and a three-point play to get the Kohawks some momentum as they cut the Beaver lead to ten at 45-35. Coe's full court press and 3-point buckets from Auen continued to chip away at the deficit. Coe made it a six point game with 11 minutes to go at 52-46. Thrapp then came up with a big block with three and a half minutes to go to ignite a late-game comeback effort for the Kohawks. 
 
Thrapp cut the BVU lead to four with two minutes remaining as the Kohawks continued their comeback attempt. A 3-point play from Greg Hall with a minute left cut the Beaver lead to one. Schmitt would give Coe their first lead of the contest at the free-throw line with 16.7 seconds remaining, but a goaltending call would give Buena Vista the one point victory. Coe outscored Buena Vista 48-33 in the second half while shooting 61.3 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from downtown. 
 
Up next: The Kohawks will return to the floor on Sunday, February 14 when they host Finalandia in a non-conference game at 1 p.m.
