PELLA, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team dropped a conference game at Central College on Saturday afternoon, falling 74-68. The Dutch jumped out to an early 15-5 lead in the opening minutes of the game which proved to be the difference in the contest, as Coe never led by more than a point the entire game. The Kohawks drop to 2-2 overall and in conference play, while the Dutch improve to 1-1 overall and in conference play.
Jacob Robertson led the way for the Kohawks with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Cael Schmitt added 12 points while
Greg Hall dropped 10 points.
Jake Eilers collected six rebounds.
The Dutch got out of the gates hot, taking a 10-point, 15-5 lead early in the game, forcing the Kohawks to play catchup for the rest of the half. The Dutch saw their largest lead eclipse 11 points, yet the Kohawks battled back to take a one-point lead with two minutes to go in the half. However, the Dutch would fight back to take a two-point lead 29-27 into the locker room. Hall led the Kohawks with seven first-half points with
Jacob Robertson adding five points and five rebounds.
Early in the second half was a back-and-forth affair with Coe taking just their third, but last lead of the game at 33-32 with 18:40 left to go. The Dutch had a 10-4 spurt midway through the second half, leading 55-46 with nine minutes remaining. The Kohawks would battle back and keep the game within six points the rest of the way, getting as a one-point on three occasions, but could never regain the lead. With under a minute to go Coe continued to fight, but the Dutch would convert at the free-throw line securing the game.
Up next: Coe will hit the hardwood again on Wednesday, Feb. 10 when it hosts Loras College for an A-R-C clash at 5:30 p.m.
