Women's Basketball Falls to Simpson in Overtime in A-R-C Championship

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Saturday evening, falling 89-84 in overtime to top-seeded Simpson College. The Storm led by as many as 14 points with 5:53 to play in the fourth quarter Coe fought all the way back to force the extra period. It was a seesawing affair in overtime but Simpson outscored Coe 10-5 in the extra frame to clinch the conference championship. Coe ends the year 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the league while Simpson finishes the campaign 12-0 overall and 8-0 in the A-R-C.

Jamie Feldt led the Kohawks in her final game for the squad, posting a career-high 27 points while adding seven boards, four steals and two assists. Jackie Feldt also eclipsed the 20-point mark while recording a double-double. The senior had 26 points, 13 boards, four steals and three assists. Freshman Center Kaalyn Petersen started the game and also recorded a double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 boards. Molly Buck hit two massive 3s to force the overtime period as she finished with 11 points overall and four rebounds.

The championship nerves showed early in the game for both teams as the squads combined for just 17 points in the first six-plus minutes of the first quarter. The Kohawks held a small five-point lead at the three-minute mark of the period after eight early points from the Feldt twins. Coe stretched the lead to seven on a Jackie Feldt jump shot but Simpson ended the quarter strong, ripping off a 7-3 stretch to close the gap to three.

Simpson scored the first three points of the second quarter, thanks to Jenna Taylor but the Kohawks responded with an old-fashioned 3-point play from Jamie Feldt. The Storm then took a five-point lead thanks to back-to-back buckets to put pressure on the Kohawks who responded with six of the next nine points to keep it close. Despite the Coe run, Simpson found a way to end the half on top, scoring seven of the final 11 points of the quarter. The Storm led 35-30 after 20 minutes as the teams combined to shoot just 5-of-23 from deep.

Simpson struck immediately out of the break, getting a 3 from Hattie Rhodes to put the Storm up eight. Coe showed no panic, answering with four-straight points from Jackie Feldt and Jamie Feldt. Coach Niemuth's team began to distance itself at the 7:28 mark, stretching their lead to eight points at the halfway point of the quarter. The Kohawks then exploded, using a 14-2 outburst to regain the lead and momentum in the game. During the run, Jackie Feldt picked up her fourth personal foul but her sister Jamie Feldt took over, scoring seven points during the run. The squads would trade buckets over the final minute of the frame but the Kohawks held a five-point advantage heading into the fourth.

The Storm took over early in the final quarter, scoring the opening 10 points of the frame to flip the score and momentum. The Kohawks refused to go away despite the lead but the Storm continued to fire offensively, extending the lead to as many as 14 points. Coe continued to fight for the final five-plus minutes of play, using a 14-3 stretch to get within three points with 1:08 to play. Following an empty Storm possession, Coe tied the game at 76 on a 3 from Buck. Simpson retook the lead after Regan Freland went 1-of-2 from the free throw line but Buck again hit a clutch 3 and thrust Coe into the lead. Simpson had the final possession of regulation where Cameron Kincaid drew a foul and converted two free throws, sending the game to OT. Simpson started strong in the overtime period, opening up a five-point lead before the three-minute mark and despite the efforts of the Kohawks, the Storm converted their free throws to secure the title.
