CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team took one of two games against UW-Platteville in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Clark Field. The Kohawks took game one thanks to the long-ball, getting home runs from
Ruby Kappeler and
Skyler Stookey to sneak past the Pioneers. Platteville proved tough in game two, scoring five early runs while fighting-off a late Kohawk rally. The split moves Coe to 6-4 overall while remaining 1-1 in the A-R-C as UW-Platteville goes to 2-4 overall and 0-0 in the WIAC.
The Kohawks racked up 22 hits in the two-game set, producing four extra-base hits and three home runs.
Bree Mangelsen smashed Coe's third with a solo shot in the seventh inning of game two, notching her first RBI of the season. Overall, Stookey led the offense, piling up four hits, two walks, two RBI and two runs scored in six plate appearances.
Natalie Blank had three hits in the two games, including the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh of game one. Game one starter
Hannah Ausenhus improved to 4-1 on the season, scattering 11 hits across seven innings while allowing just three runs. The sophomore tallied four strikeouts while issuing no walks.
GAME 1
COE 4 - UW-PLATTEVILLE 3
The Kohawks opened the scoring in the first game, thanks to a solo home run from
Kappeler. Ausenhus was cruising along until she ran into a fourth-inning, one-out rally from the Pioneers which saw them plate two in the frame. Ausenshus limited the damage with runners on second and third, getting a strikeout to retire the side. Coe responded and retook the lead in the bottom of the inning, pushing two runners home after Stookey's two-run blast. After a scoreless fifth, the Pioneers led the sixth inning off with a solo home run to tie the game at 3-3. Coe was unable to get a rally going in the sixth but in the seventh, the Kohawks put the first two hitters on base as Stookey and
Megan Weber singled. After Stookey advanced to third on a throw,
Blank
drove her in with a game-winning RBI single.
GAME 2
UW-PLATTEVILLE 8 - COE 4
The Pioneers struck first in game two, putting five runs on the board in the first three innings which included a two-RBI double from Shannon Gaul in the third. Despite early offensive struggles, Coe battled tough, scoring a run in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings but Platteville pitchers worked their way out of trouble to limit the damage. In the fifth inning, the Kohawks got an RBI single from
Hannah Escamilla but they stranded the bases loaded after a pop out. Coe again threatened in the sixth, getting another run back after an RBI single from
Kelsey Hora but a sharp line out in the next plate appearance ended the frame. Coe then brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning but Platteville again worked itself out of the jam, getting a groundout to first base to end the game.
Up next: Coe is back on the diamond on Saturday, March 27th when the Kohawks travel to Nebraska Wesleyan for an A-R-C double-header.
