LINCOLN, NE. - The Coe College softball team took one of two against Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-5 in game one while finishing strong with a 6-1 victory in game two. NWU took the opener with a game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh frame. The Kohawks secured the split in game two with four runs in the fifth inning, which featured a two-RBI double from
Madi Parson. The results move Coe to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the A-R-C while Nebraska Wesleyan goes to 6-7 and 4-1 in the league.
Ellie Thurow was excellent in the circle in game two, pitching a complete-game while allowing just one run. The sophomore struck out eight prairie wolves and scattered six hits en route to her second victory of the season.
Bree Mangelsen and
Shaylee Dodd each collected three hits for the Kohawks across the two games, combining for three runs and two RBI.
Keera Ball posted two hits, two runs and one RBI in game two, including a double, her third of the season.
GAME 1
NWU 6 - COE 5
Both teams came up empty in the opening two innings, but Nebraska Wesleyan opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with three runs. The Prairie Wolves used back-to-back hits to push three across and take the lead. Coe responded immediately in the top of the fourth with five runs of its own. After a strikeout, four-straight Kohawks reached base, setting the stage for the big hits.
Shaylee Dodd, Mangelesen and
Natalie Blank picked-up back-to-back-to-back hits including a two-RBI triple from Blank to put the Kohawks in front 5-3. NWU got one back in the bottom of the inning after some small-ball but Coe continued to lead by one into the bottom of the seventh. Nebraska Wesleyan took advantage of its final opportunity in the inning, scoring two runs with two outs to pull off the comeback.
GAME 2
COE 6 - NWU 1
NWU got on the board first in game two, after a RBI-single in the third inning. After a slow start, the Coe bats came to life in the fifth inning, pushing four runs across in the frame on RBI from Blank, Ball and Parson. Thurow was in control in the circle, striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it eight in the game. Coe got Thurow two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning as
Skyler Stookey picked up an RBI while Parson scored on a double-steal.
Up next: Coe will complete the three-game set with NWU tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The teams will play a JV game following the varsity game.
