Softball Secures Series Victory at NWU with 8-5 Win

LINCOLN, NE. - The Coe College softball team earned a series victory on Sunday afternoon behind an 8-5 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan. The Kohawk fell behind immediately, surrendering two runs in the first inning but a six-run, sixth-inning gave Coe the lead for good. The offense posted a season-high 13 hits including two extra-base hits from Keera Ball and Megan Weber. With the win, Coe improves to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the league while NWU falls to 6-8 and 4-2 in the A-R-C. 
 
Ball and Weber each collected two RBI in the game with Madi Parson, Skyler Stookey and Chloe Severson all driving in one run each. Ruby Kappeler joined Parson, Stookey and Ball with a multi-hit game as Ball recorded three to lead the offense. Starting pitcher Abby Stock pitched all seven innings en route to her second win of the year, surrendering just two earned runs and scattering seven hits.
 
GAME 1 
COE 8 - NWU 5
NWU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run with two outs in the frame. Coe got the bats going in the top of the third, using a two-out rally to tie the score at two. Parson singled to left to start the rally and was followed by back-to-back hits including a two-RBI double from Weber. The Prairie Wolves retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on two hits in the frame. Coe responded immediately, exploding for six runs on six hits in the top of the sixth inning. After a strikeout to lead off the inning, four-straight Kohawks reached base with two coming around to score. NWU changed pitchers mid-rally but Coe added to its total, scoring three runs with two outs on RBI hits from Ball, Parson and Stookey. Stock then shutdown the P-Wolves in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, retiring them in order in both frames to secure the series win. 
 
Up next: Coe will return home for its next two A-R-C series', hosting Buena Vista on April 2 and 3 before welcoming Loras on April 8 and 10.
