Volleyball Sweeps Simpson for Second-Straight Win

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College volleyball team swept the Simpson College Storm 3-0 on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena. Coe won set one comfortably before eeking out a 25-23 victory in set two to take command of the contest. The Kohawks then cruised to a 25-15 victory in the final set to pick up the victory. The result moves Coe to 3-1 overall and in the A-R-C while Simpson drops to 1-3 overall and in the league. 
 
Kate Tidman led the Kohawks with 13 kills on the evening, adding six digs and one block assist. Majda Suljic and Madi Parson also had excellent nights for Coe, posting 18 and 16 digs respectively. Parson added seven kills, five aces and a block assist while Suljic added four assists and one kill. Morgan Kluesner and Grace Lueken provided solid offense as well with Kluesener tallying seven kills and Lueken six.
 
Coe opened the first set on fire, outscoring the Storm 10-4 to take early control of the contest. During the run, Coe got four-straight service aces from Parson as well as a pair of kills from Tidman. The Kohawks continued to dominate the set, extending its lead to 21-12 and forcing another Storm timeout. Out of the break, Tidman posted two more kills while Lueken ended the set with back-to-back kills. 
 
The Storm were stronger in set two, trading points with the Kohawks in the opening rallies of the frame as the teams were tied at 11. Simpson then ripped-off five-straight points to take a commanding lead and force a timeout from Coach Akins. Coe broke the run following the break but Simpson continued to click and pushed its lead to 19-13 forcing another timeout. 
 
The Kohawks woke up after the second timeout, scoring five of the next seven points to cut into the deficit and force the Storm to take a timeout with its lead at just 21-18. Coe stayed hot after the pause, scoring seven of the final nine points of the set to increase its overall lead to 2-0. 
 
The teams traded points to begin the third set of the match but Coe took a 9-5 lead after back-to-back kills from Kluesner and Tidman. Simpson wouldn't go away despite the score, picking up four of the next six points to get within two points and force a Coe timeout. The Kohawks responded out of the break, ripping off a 4-1 spurt while taking a five-point lead and forcing Simpson to call time. The Kohawks lead continued to grow after the break as they pushed the score to 22-13 after another service ace from Parson. Coe ended the game with one final kill from the freshman Lueken, as it secured its second-straight win of the season. 
 
Up next: The Kohawks will be back on the court on Saturday, April 6 when they host Luther at 2:00 p.m. inside Kohawk Arena.
