CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team completed a series sweep of Simpson College on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Storm 16-5 in game one and 5-4 in game two. The Kohawks put up 15 hits and a season-high 16 runs in game one while winning in walk-off fashion in game two to finish the sweep of Simpson. The sweep moves the Kohawks to 22-3 overall and 18-2 in the American Rivers Conference while Simpson falls to 7-15 overall and 4-12 in the league.
Coe racked up double-digit hits in both games, totaling 26 on the afternoon while picking up six extra-base hits.
Riley LeGrand led the squad with five hits at the dish while
Jordan Kaplan, TJ Johnson, Isaac Evans, Jacob Henry, Creighton Kreshel and
Tyler Elliott all had multiple hits in the games. Kaplan and Johnson had a team-high four RBI, as Kaplan drove in four runs in the opener. Game one starter,
TJ Deardorff earned his fifth win of the season, improve to 5-0 with six innings of work while surrendering just two hits and three runs.
GAME 1 (7 Innings)
COE 16 - SIMPSON 5
The Kohawks started the scoring in the day's first game as
TJ Johnson doubled home Henry in the bottom of the first inning to get things going. After a Simpson solo homer in the top of the second, Coe responded, scoring four runs in the bottom of the frame to take control of the game. The first three batters reached safely to open the inning for the Kohawks as Henry was hit by a pitch to score Kreshel. After a strikeout, Kaplan produced a clutch one-out hit, singling through the left side to plate Evans and
Tyce Johnson.
Jack Allison then picked up the final RBI of the inning for Coe, drawing a walk with the bases loaded to score Henry and increase the lead to 5-1. Simpson again responded in the top of the fourth inning, hitting another home run, this time a two-run shot to pull within two of the Kohawk lead.
The offense picked up Deardorff in the bottom of the inning, using seven hits to score seven runs to blow the game open. After a leadoff strikeout, Coe had eight consecutive batters reach safely as Evans singled and was followed by Henry who doubled to put runners on second and third. The Kohawks then got back-to-back RBI hits as
TJ Johnson singled to score Evans while Kaplan singled home Johnson and Henry. LeGrand and Allison then hit back-to-back doubles to keep the rally going, as Allison drove in two with the hit. Coe got two more runs before the end of the frame, with Kreshel recording an RBI single while Evans notched a sacrifice fly to make it 12-3. The Kohawks then scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and bottom of the sixth innings to put the game out of reach for the Storm.
GAME 2
COE 5 - SIMPSON 4
Coe again took an early lead in game two as Evans scored on a wild pitch to go up 1-0. Simpson then scored in back-to-back innings, getting one run in the second and two in the third to take the lead thanks to one hit and a run down which allowed a runner from third to score. The game then went scoreless for the next four innings as the squads combined for just four hits during the stretch but the Storm got an important insurance run in the top of the eighth Kohawks tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with two runs. LeGrand and Deardorff led off the inning with back-to-back hits to set up Kreshel who drove in one with a sacrifice fly. Evans then tied the game with an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Deardorff. After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth, Coe had a chance to sweep the Storm in the bottom of the ninth. The Kohawks got back-to-back singles with one out from
TJ Johnson and Kaplan as LeGrand was intentionally walked to load the bases. Allison then came to the plate and worked himself to a 3-2 count where he earned the walk to secure the victory for Coe.
