Softball Finishes Series Sweep of Loras on Sunday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team finished off a series sweep of Loras College on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Duhawks 5-4 in eight innings as Shaylee Dodd scored the walk-off run. The Kohawks, who tallied eight hits in the game, were led by Dodd who had a team-high three hits and one RBI. Skyler Stookey and Madi Parson also picked up multiple hits in the game for Coe as starting pitcher Hannah Ausenhus earned her eighth win of the season. The sweep moves the Kohawks to 16-7 overall and 11-4 in the A-R-C which has Coe atop the league standings with eight conference games remaining. 
 
COE 5 - LORAS 4 (8 Innings)
The Duhawks jumped out in front in the third game of the series, scoring a single run in the top of the first inning. Following a scoreless bottom of the first and top of the second, Coe tied the game in the bottom of the second as Parson scored on a Duhawk error. Loras responded in the top of the third inning, getting four hits and two runs to regain the lead at 3-1. The Kohawks answered back in the bottom of the frame to take a lead, scoring three runs on three hits including RBIs from  Stookey and Dodd. Loras got one back in the top of the fourth inning, tying the game at four on a pair of Coe errors. After back-to-back scoreless innings, Loras threatened in the seventh, getting a runner on third with one out but Ausenhus buckled down and stranded the runner to send it to the bottom of the inning. After a scoreless bottom of the seventh and top of the eighth, Coe got a leadoff double from Dodd in the bottom of the inning. Kappeler was the next Kohawk to the plate as she hit a hard grounder through the middle which kicked off a Duhawk glove, allowing Dodd to score. 
 
Up next: Coe will be back at Clark Field on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Luther College for one game which will complete the three-game set for the season. First-pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Cedar Rapids.
