CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Andrew Russell scored a winner late in the second overtime to secure Coe College men's soccer's first American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) victory, 3-2, over Buena Vista University. Russell latched on to a long ball from
Mac Buckley with just over two minutes remaining in the second overtime and slotted it into the side netting.
Buena Vista got on the board early in the first half, netting the opener in the 5th minute as Braeden Evans found the back of the net. Coe responded, beginning to dominate the game for periods of time as the Kohawks earned a PK but the BVU keeper made the save to keep it tied at one. The Beavers made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute from a corner kick as Zach Tretler scored off an assist from Noah Becker. The Kohawks recorded three shots in the final five-plus minutes of the half but the Beaver goalie made a save on a shot attempt from
CJ Joseph.
The Kohawks were on top early in the second half, putting pressure on the Beavers from the start of the period. Coe finally got on the score sheet in the 55th minute as
Gonzala Fonseca Puerta scored his first of the season to cut the deficit to one. Buena Vista continued to struggle on offense in the second half, as the Kohawks dominated the ball. Coe then scored the equalizer in the 76th minute as a header from
Blake Jungman found the back of the net after a long-throw from
Lucas Huitink, setting the stage for overtime.
