Softball Beats UD 7-3, Completes Series Sweep

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College softball team defeated the University of Dubuque 7-3 on Saturday afternoon to complete the series sweep. The Kohawks scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning, which included a pair of two-run doubles for Madi Parson and Megan Weber. Overall, Coe had 10 hits in the game with four extra-base hits and six RBI. The victory moved the Kohawks to 19-8 overall and 14-5 in the American Rivers Conference while the Spartans dropped to 18-11 and 7-10 in the league.

The Spartans started the scoring in the third game of the series, plating one run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double from Deanna Origer. The Kohawks responded in the top of the second inning, tying the game with a lead-off homer from Madi Parson. UD retook the lead in the bottom of the third, getting two hits, including an RBI single off the bat of Emily Bloomer. Coe bounced back again in the top of the fourth inning to tie the score, getting an RBI single from Bree Mangelsen, scoring Shaylee Dodd. The bats then went cold for both teams as it went scoreless for the next 2 ½ innings before Coe exploded for five in the top of the seventh. Five of the first six Kohawk batters reached safely in the frame as Parson recorded her second and third RBI of the game with a double through the left side. Megan Weber was Coe's next batter as she made it 6-2 with a two-run double of her own to break the game open. Coe's final run came from a Spartan error as Kaitlyn Filter crossed home to make it 7-2 headed to the bottom of the seventh. Hannah Ausenhus, who entered the game in the bottom of the fifth inning in relief of Ellie Thurow, got the final three outs despite surrendering one run in the seventh as she earned her ninth win of the season. 
 
Up next: Coe will return to action on Tuesday, April 27th when it hosts Central College at 2:00 p.m at Clark Field.
