Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Takes a Pair from Central, Earns Series Victory over Dutch

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team won a pair of games against Central on Tuesday afternoon, winning 5-3 in the resumed game two for earlier in the season while knocking off the Dutch 4-0 in the originally scheduled contest. Kohawk pitcher Ellie Thurow came back into the game in the top of the seventh inning in the opener and recorded a 1-2-3 inning to secure the victory. Bree Mangelsen hit a pair of home runs in game two while Thurow threw a complete-game shutout as the Kohawks secured the series victory over Central. The results move Coe to 21-8 overall and 16-5 in the A-R-C while Central drops to 13-9 and 11-7 in the league.

COE  5 - CENTRAL 3 (GAME RESUMED IN TOP OF 7TH INNING)
Coe took the early lead, thanks to an RBI double from Skyler Stookey which scored Ball from third. The Storm got one run back on a solo home run from Franie Burnett but Thurow got back-to-back strikeouts to keep it tied at one. The Kohawks then got the big blast in the bottom of the third as Megan Weber hit a two-out grand slam, scoring Hora, Ball and Stookey on the long ball. Thurow faced some trouble in the top of the fifth inning, surrendering two runs on a weakly hit single to the right side. Weber, who was behind the plate for game two, helped her pitcher out on the next play and threw out a potential base runner to end the threat as Coe led 5-3 after 4 ½ innings. The Kohawks put the pressure on the Dutch in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting runners on second and third with two outs but Central managed to get out of the jam. Thurow came back into the postponed game in the top of the seventh inning and worked a 1-2-3 inning to secure the victory for the Kohawks.

GAME TWO
COE 4 - CENTRAL 0
The Kohawks got on the board in the first inning of the normally scheduled game, as Madi Parson drove home Kelsey Hora with a two-out single to take the lead. Coe struck again with two outs in the bottom of the second as Bree Mangelsen hit a solo homer with two strikes to make it 2-0. A pitching battle broke out for the next three innings as both hurlers put together three consecutive scoreless frames to send the game into the sixth with Coe in front 2-0. Thurow, who was dominating the game, returned in the sixth and worked a 1-2-3 inning before Mangelsen delivered her second bomb of the game, this time a two-run shot. Thurow then ended the game with another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh, getting a pop out, fly-out and line-out to secure her ninth win of the season.

Up next: Coe will play its final non-conference games of the regular season on Saturday when it travels to WashU for a two-game series at 2:00 p.m. in St. Louis.
