ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Coe College softball team lost a pair of close games to WashU on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-5 in the opener and 5-4 in game two. The Kohawks grabbed a late 5-4 lead in game one thanks to a homer from
Chloe Severson but a three-run shot for the Bears in the bottom of the sixth gave WashU game one. The Bears led 5-1 after five innings of game two, but a late Kohawk rally which featured three runs in the sixth got Coe within striking distance of the lead. In the top of the seventh, Coe put runners on second and third with one out but WashU stranded the runners with a strikeout and ground out. The losses drop the Kohawks to 21-10 overall while the Bears move to 11-9 on the season.
WASHU 7 - COE 5
Madi Parson opened the game with a bang in the top of the first inning, belting a two-run home run to give Coe an early lead. WashU responded immediately in the bottom of the frame as Tami Wong hit a solo bomb to cut the deficit in half. The Bears struck again in the home half of the third inning, scoring three runs in the inning to take the 4-2 lead. The Kohawks scored the next three runs in the game, getting one in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from
Chloe Severson, scoring

The Bears answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting a three-run shot of their own from Wong, her second of the day. The Kohawks had one final half-inning to force extra innings but a 1-2-3 inning for WashU secured the opener for the Bears.
GAME TWO
WASHU 5 - COE 4
WashU got on the board first in game two, getting an RBI-single from Ashley Kennedy in the bottom of the first inning. Gabrielle Buckridge then pulled the Kohawks within one run of the lead as she hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer which scored
Madi Parson. Coe threatened again in the top of the seventh inning, putting runners on second and third with one out but Holly Stoner was able to get out of the jam to secure the victory for WashU.
Up next: Coe will return to conference play next weekend when it heads to Wartburg for its final three-game series of the season against the Knights.
