Baseball Earns Series Sweep over Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa -  The Coe College baseball team swept a pair of games against Buena Vista on Saturday, extending its winning streak to 10 games. The Kohawks took game one 6-2, thanks in part to a solid effort from starting pitcher TJ Deardorff and then exploded for a season-high 16 hits and 13 runs in game two to earn the sweep. Game two starter, Matthew Mittelmark earned his fourth win of the season, pitching six innings while allowing just one run and seven hits. The wins move the Kohawks to 15-2 on the season and 11-1 in the A-R-C while Buena Vista falls to 8-9 and 6-6 in the league.

Five Kohawks had multi-hit afternoons as Riley LeGrand finished with five hits, six RBI and two runs scored to pace the offense. Lead-off man, Isaac Evans had an excellent day at the plate, going 5-of-7 while racking up two doubles and four RBI. Jacob Henry posted four hits in the victories, adding two RBI and three runs scored. Creighton Kreshel and Reid Rausch were solid in game two, as the pair each went 2-of-4 at the plate, picking up two runs scored and one RBI. Rausch's RBI came in the top of the fourth inning when he hit a solo blast, his second of the year.

GAME 1
COE 6 - BVU 2
The Kohawks opened the scoring in the first game as LeGrand singled home Henry and Evans on a 2-2 count. Coe struck again in the second inning as Evans picked up an RBI, pushing Rausch across the plate with a single up the middle. Deardorff, who got the start in game one, dominated the Beavers in the first three innings as he allowed just two hits early on. Coe added to its total in the fourth, getting two more runs thanks to an Evans' RBI single and a pass ball which allowed VanHooser to score. Deardorff continued his strong performance in the bottom of the frame, striking out two of the Beaver batters he faced in the inning. Coe ended its scoring for game one in the top of the fifth as Tyler Elliott drove in LeGrand to extend the advantage to six.  The Beavers fought in the sixth and seventh innings, getting one run in each but Austin Divello came in for the Kohawks and recorded the final out of the game.

GAME 2
COE 13 - BVU 1 (7 Innings)
The Kohawks bats stayed hot in game two, putting four runs on the board in the opening three innings to take a commanding lead. During the stretch, Coe got RBI from Kreshel, LeGrand and TJ Johnson, who doubled down the left-field line to score two Kohawks. Rausch then kicked off the four-run fourth inning with a solo shot which was followed by hits from Henry and LeGrand to put the game out of reach. Mittelmark, who was in control of the game, exited following the sixth inning as Coe led 10-0. Following three more runs for the Kohawks in the top of the seventh, Jordan Joselit came in and secured the victory and the series sweep.

Up next: The Kohawks return to the diamond next weekend for a four-game series at Loras College on April 9 and 10.
