CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team dropped the final game of a three-game series with Buena Vista on Saturday, falling 5-2 at Clark Field. The Beavers took a first-inning lead and got solid pitching from Peyton Gross to salvage one game of the set. Despite the loss,
Bre Mangelsen hit her second home run in two days and her third of the season. The loss moves the Kohawks to 10-6 overall and 5-3 in the A-R-C while BVU improves to 12-9 and 4-5 in the league.
Six different Kohawks recorded hits on the afternoon with
Shaylee Dodd and Mangelsen driving in their lone two runs.
Skyler Stookey drew three walks in the game, coming around to score her 16th run of the season. Coe starting pitcher
Ellie Thurow went 6 and ? innings, scattering seven hits while allowing four earned runs.
BVU 5 - COE 2
The Beavers opened the game with a lead-off home run off the bat of Carlee Guyet, giving them a 1-0 lead after one inning. The Kohawks got on the board in the second inning as Stookey scored on an error by BVU to tie the score at one. The Beavers' broke the tie in the top of the fourth inning, using a sacrifice fly to regain a one-run lead. Buena Vista added a key insurance run in the top of the sixth inning with another home run, this time off the bat of Ashtyn Miller, putting the Beavers up 3-1 heading into the bottom of the inning. The Kohawks kept fighting in the bottom of the frame, getting one run back on Mangelsen's third homer of the season but Peyton Gross got the next two Kohawks out to limit the damage. Buena Vista added two more runs in the top-half of the seventh inning, extending its lead while dashing the comeback hopes of the Kohawks.
Up next: Coe will return to action next week when it hosts Loras in a three-game set on April 8 and 10.
