Box Score 2 INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Coe College softball team took the first two games of a three-game series at Simpson on Sunday afternoon, taking game one 7-6 while winning 7-3 in the second contest. Coe took an early 7-1 in the third inning of game two and fought off a Storm comeback attempt which saw them bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. The Kohawks got down early in game two, falling behind 2-0 after one inning, but two runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings led them to their second win of the day. The sweep moves the Kohawks to 12-6 overall and 7-3 in the A-R-C while the Storm falls to 7-10 and 5-6 in the league.
Coe had 26 hits across the two games, posting 14 in the opener and 12 in game two.
Shaylee Dodd, Skyler Stookey and
Ruby Kappeler had excellent days at the plate for the Kohawks, picking up five hits each while Kappeler had a team-high four RBI.
Kelsey Hora,
Madi Parson,
Megan Weber and
Natalie Blank also had multi-hit days at the plate with Weber hitting her first home run of the season. Coe pitchers
Hannah Ausenhus and
Ellie Thurow picked up a win each in the games as Ausenhus improved to 6-1 while Thurow moves to 4-2 overall.
COE 7 - SIMPSON 6
Coe and Simpson played a scoreless opening inning but both teams struck in the second, as the squads each scored one run in the frame. Weber got Coe on the board in the inning with a solo home run, her first of the campaign but an RBI single from Simpson tied the game. The Kohawks then exploded in the third inning, scoring six runs in the top half while racking up seven hits. Hora and
Keera Ball led the inning off with a single as Parson kept the momentum going with a double to score Hora. Following a pitching change, Stookey delivered a two-run single to the left side, scoring Ball and Parson to make the score 4-1.
Bree Mangelsen stretched the lead with another single, plating two more Kohawks as Stookey and
Bailey Erlandson scored before Dodd crossed home on an error on the play. Simpson responded in the bottom of the third inning, getting one run back after a wild pitch but Ausenhus struck out the final two batters of the inning to limit any further damage. The Storm got even closer in the sixth inning after a three-run home run and then brought the winning run to the plate in the seventh inning but Ausenhus got two foul-outs to end the game.
COE 7 - SIMPSON 3
The Storm started the scoring in game two, getting a two-run blast in the first inning to take the early lead. Coe struck back in the second inning, as back-to-back Kohawks reached with one out in the inning to set the stage for Kappeler. She came through in the clutch and doubled to left-center, scoring Dodd and Erlandson to tie the score at two. Coe put more pressure on Simpson in the inning but an outfield assist on a play at the plate ended the chances for the Kohawks. After a scoreless third, Coe struck again as Blank singled down the left-field line to score Stookey and Weber, putting Coe in front 4-2. Simpson got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning, with a solo home run but it would mark the Storm's final run of the afternoon. Coe got insurance in the fifth inning, as Stookey hit a solo homer, her second of the season to make it 5-3. Kappeler pushed the lead to three with an RBI-double down to right-center which scored Dodd to put it out of reach for Simpson. She ended her day in style with another RBI, this time a single to right field which scored Parson, ending the scoring for both teams.
Up next: Coe will finish the three-game series with Simpson tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. prior to a doubleheader with Central on Tuesday in Cedar Rapids.
