Seventh-inning surge not enough as sixth-seeded Softball suffers semifinal defeat to second-seeded Simpson

WAVERLY, Iowa – The sixth-seeded Coe College Softball team saw its 2026 season come to a close on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-4 in heartbreaking fashion to the second-seeded Simpson College Storm in the American Rivers Conference tournament semifinals. Coe and Simpson were scoreless after three innings, with both starting pitchers easing through the opening few frames. The Storm struck first and broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth, getting three runs with one swing of the bat as a three-run homer gave Simpson the lead. The Kohawks threatened in the sixth with two runners on, but failed to capitalize with an inning-ending groundout. Coe made it count in its final at-bat, getting a one-out solo shot from Hadyn Shoots to get on the board before loading the bases for Maddie Harris. The senior came through clutch, delivering a bases-clearing double to give Coe the lead at 4-3. Simpson didn't waver despite the big blow, immediately answering with three-straight one-out hits in the bottom of the seventh to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

SIMPSON 5 - COE 4
  • It was scoreless across the opening three frames as Kohawk starter Natalie Hitt was dealing early on. Simpson took advantage of back-to-back defensive miscues from Coe in the fourth as two errors with one out allowed the inning to continue. A foul out nearly ended the threat but a two-out, three-run homer gave Simpson the early jolt. After the failed chance in the sixth, Coe made it happen in the seventh, getting three hits and four runs to take the lead. Shoots started the party with her second homer of the tournament, blasting a solo shot to make it 3-1. Hitt singled to keep the rallying going and was joined on base by Taylor Drayfahl and Grace McCarty who each drew walks to load the bases. Harris gave the Kohawks the lead in the following at-bat, delivering a bases-clearing double to left center to make it 4-3. Simpson responded in its half of the seventh, putting together three straight hits to walk-off the Kohawks.
