CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team fell to Luther College 5-0 on Friday morning in an elimination game of the American Rivers Conference Softball Tournament. Luther took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning and scored again in the fourth and fifth innings to take control of the game. The Norse scored one final run in the seventh inning which proved to be enough to down the Kohawks. Coe, which is now eliminated from the A-R-C Tournament, awaits its NCAA Regional Assignment which will be announced at the NCAA selection show on Monday, May 17 at noon central.
GAME ONE
LUTHER 5 - COE 0
Coe threatened early on in the elimination game, loading the bases in the bottom of the first inning but Luther managed to turn a 4-3 double-play to escape the jam. The Kohawks put runners on second and third in the bottom of the second inning with two outs but again Luther got the final out to keep it scoreless after two. Luther got on the board in the top of the third inning, getting back-to-back one-out hits before a sacrifice fly opened the scoring. The Norse added two more runs in the top of the fourth as their first three hitters reached to start the inning. Kyal Heydt scored in the inning on an RBI single from Emily Versnik before a clutch two-out RBI single from Anna Forari made it 3-0. Luther added another in the top of the fifth on a solo homer from Elsa Skeie which came with one out. Coe had runners on first and second in the bottom of the inning but a line-out and pop-out got Luther out of the inning unscathed. The Norse got one final insurance run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI groundout from Heydt which gave starter Kendra Cooper plenty of room to work with. Cooper returned to the circle in the bottom of the seventh and worked a 1-2-3 inning to secure the victory.
Up next: Coe awaits its assignment for the NCAA Regional Tournament with the NCAA Selection Show scheduled for noon central time.
