Ellie Thurow Tosses Three-Hit Shutout to Lead Softball Past MSOE

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College softball team got a three-hit shutout from the American Rivers Conference Pitcher of the Year, Ellie Thurow, on Friday evening as the fourth-seeded Kohawks took down the third-seeded Milwaukee School of Engineering. Thurow struck out just two batters in the game but was in total control as she forced 11 flyouts and eight ground outs. Offensively, Coe had seven hits, two from sophomore left-fielder, Ruby Kappeler. Kappeler drove in the game's lone run in the top of the fifth inning with a clutch one-out single. The victory advances Coe into the Waverly Regional winner's bracket where the Kohawks will face the two-seed St. Thomas tomorrow at noon.

The Kohawks got a one-out base runner in the top of the first inning as Kappeler singled to right but was later caught stealing to clear the bases. Madi Parson drew a two-out walk in the next plate appearance but a groundout kept it scoreless. Thurow worked a near-perfect inning in the bottom, getting around a Kohawk error which saw MSOE put a runner on. Megan Weber walked to lead off the top of the second for Coe and was replaced by Emmalee Torson who came in to run. Natalie Blank then reached on a bunt single, putting runners on first and second but three-straight outs got the Raiders of the jam.

Both teams went quiet for the third and fourth innings but the Kohawks got on the board in the fifth after back-to-back hits to start the inning. Keera Ball smoked a double to left field to lead off and later scored on Kappeler's grounder up the middle as she picked up her 13th RBI of the year. Parson, the next hitter, singled up the middle but the Raiders hurler managed to work her way out of trouble with a fly out and strikeout. MSOE then put its first two runners aboard with a single and a walk but Thurow got three-straight hitters including an inning-ending foul out to catcher Skyler Stookey. Neither team managed to take advantage of base runners in the sixth innings before both teams were retired in order in the seventh as Thurow secured the victory for Coe in the bottom of the seventh.

Up next: Coe advances to the winner's bracket to take on St. Thomas at noon on Saturday.
