Baseball Sweeps Wartburg, Extends Winning Streak to Seven

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team defeated Wartburg in a doubleheader on Saturday morning at Daniels Park as the Kohawks downed the Knights 7-1 and and 14-4. Earlier in the morning, the squads resumed their suspended game from last night with Coe securing a game three win in the bottom of the 12th inning on an RBI single from Nolan Cavanaugh. In the regularly scheduled double header, the Kohawks got excellent pitching performances from starters TJ Deardorff and Matthew Mittelmark as the pair earned their eighth and fifth wins of the season. Senior TJ Johnson was stellar at the plate, racking up eight RBI on the day while hitting two homers and a double. Overall, the Kohawks had 17 hits in the second game with nine players recording at least one and four posting multi-hit games.

GAME 1
COE 7 - WARTBURG 1 (7 Innings)
Coe got on the board first in the opening game with a run in the second frame after a scoreless first inning. Jacob Henry led off with a single and then stole second before moving to third on a single from Jack Allison. After a fielder's choice got Wartburg its first out of the inning, Matthew Schrader laid down a perfect bunt which resulted in an RBI single as Henry scored on the play. Coe made it 2-0 an inning later as LeGrand singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch. The Kohawks would go on to add a run in the fourth and in the fifth on an RBI single from Tyler Elliott and a solo homer from Johnson before Wartburg got a run in the top of the sixth. Coe then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning with three insurance runs. LeGrand drove in the first with an RBI sac-fly before Johnson doubled home a pair of Kohawks to make it 7-1. Deardorff, who was dominant on the mound for Coe, worked a scoreless seventh inning to earn his eighth win of the season.

GAME 2
COE 14 - WARTBURG 4 (8 Innings)
The Kohawks took another early lead in game two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits including a two-run single from Johnson. Coe got Mittelmark more insurance in the bottom of the second, scoring a pair of runs on RBIs from Johnson and Jordan Kaplan. The Knights finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single but the Kohawk offense picked up Mittelmark in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs. In the at-bat, Coe scored its sixth run of the game on a balk before Johnson launched a two-run homer over the right-field fence. Coe added two more in the fifth after another scoreless half from Mittelmark, as Elliott scored on an error before Kaplan drove in Isaac Evans for his second RBI of the game. Wartburg refused to go away despite trailing 10-1, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning to cut the deficit to six. The Coe offense continued to click in the seventh and eighth innings as the Kohawks would score the final four runs of the game to end the game by run rule. In the seventh, Deardorff singled home two runs for his second and third RBI of the game and his 18th total RBI. Creighton Kreshel led off the eighth with a single before moving to second on a passed ball while James VanHooser drove him in with an RBI-single. Elliott doubled to right in Coe's next at-bat putting runners and second and third for LeGrand. LeGrand then singled over the short stop's head, allowing VanHooser to score the winning run for the Kohawks.

Up next: Coe will finish its regular season next weekend in a four-game series with Luther College which will determine the top seed in the American Rivers Conference Postseason Tournament.
